recommend a vacuum under or around $400
We have mainly wood floors in our house and some carpeting, so it needs to work for both.

We have the Kenmore Progressive..the white one. Excellent vacuum. It's our second Kenmore.

I have the Simplicity S20. It has an attachment for carpeting...it works fantastic on hardwood floors (which is my entire house).

I got mine about 3 years ago. I have the yellow one. the all floors one. I love that thing! I just looked it up. I have the DC 07.

We also have the yellow Dyson. It's the only vaccuum I've ever owned that doesn't give me a sneezing fit after using it.
I actually like vaccuuming now.

We have an Electrolux and really like it. We have mostly wood floors in our home. It's $399.

The best dyson for carpet is the DC17 but if you have wood floors I suggest the DC21.

Every rating chart I've ever seen puts the Dyson as middle of the pack of the better vacuums. For less than half the cost of any Dyson, you can get several other brands that are much better.

I have a Miele TT Cat and Dog that I rate highly. I don't know if they do the same model in the states, but I know that Fortunoff does carry Miele. It has fabric bags (I don't fancy a bagless one, too dusty for me) and the filtration is very strong. I have 2 hairy-fairy cats and an Asthmatic toddler.

See, I don't know if I trust consumer reports - I bought a Kenmore 2 years ago based on their recommendation and I HATE it!! I am now buying a Dyson canister.
