im soo glad you posted this, DH and I just got back from Montana and we both LOVE it there, we have been talking a lot about going there since we got home.

Montana is one of the places, dh and i have thought about moving. It is low on the list because my parents don't fly and where we would consider moving does not have a direct flight. I have been there twice once flying and the other driving.

Re: Questions for those who moved out of state

1. Where did you move?
Tucson, AZ.

2. What the adjustment like for you? Was it really tough/ easier?
My DH and I (BF at the time) moved out there right after undergrad so he could pursue his PhD. Although I had no reason to move back to LI (we went to school upstate) and figured I had nothing to lose by moving out west, it was definitely hard. We didn't know a single soul and had no family anywhere close by. Plus, Tucson is extremely different than NY. It took me a long time to feel like I "fit in" out there.

3. Do you miss NYC terribly?
Overtime, I grew to miss NY less and less. I still missed certain things about it, but the hardest part was missing my family and feeling like I was missing out on things.

4. Do you feel like the culture is really different in the place you live ( in a good way or a bad way) Do you feel isolated or different as a former NYC'er?
The culture out in AZ is definitely different. Tucson is more laid back, younger and "hippy-ish" than the rest of the state, so it was easier or us to fit in there than it would have been if we had been in another part of the state. It still took a long time, but eventually, I loved Tucson. After about 5 years, I had no intention of ever leaving, even though I knew my DH would eventually finish his PhD and we'd have to leave and go where ever he got a job. In the end, we were there for 7 years and actually moved back to NY last Sept after my DH graduated and somehow landed a Postdoc at BNL. But honestly, I would move back to Tucson in a heartbeat. I would never have become the person I am today without the experiences I had out there. Although I never wanted to raise a family out there, we had amazing friends and a great lifestyle, one which I sorely miss now that we're back east. The heat certainly takes some getting used to and I definitely don't miss that, but it's hard not to miss just about everything else about it. But all in all, we're happy out here too. When DH's PostDoc ends next Sept, we'll probably have to move again though and I can only hope we are happy wherever we end up. I figure if we can make Tucson work for us, we can handle anything!

1. Where did you move?
Atlanta, GA

2. What the adjustment like for you? Was it really tough/ easier?

The first year or two was tough. Hard to make friends when in 30's with no kids. After we had our first DC I met tons more people and have some very good friends now (5 years later). Otherwise I adjusted very well and really like our life here. We live in the middle of the city but have a house and cars and parks and cute town in walking distance. I really like it.

3. Do you miss NYC terribly?

I miss the familiarity of a place I called home for my entire life. I miss the city on occasion but go back often enough to get my fix. I do not miss any of the suburbs. I can have the suburbs here if I wanted... This was not an issue.

4. Do you feel like the culture is really different in the place you live ( in a good way or a bad way) Do you feel isolated or different as a former NYC'er?

I feel like I fit in well. There are tons of transplants here. My closest friends are from, DC, NYC, CA etc. I dont connect well with the true southerners.

Do you live in a suburb or the actual city? Some of the suburbs there are stunning ie Alpharetta, Roswell etc.

1. Where did you move?
Charlotte, NC

2. What the adjustment like for you? Was it really tough/ easier?
For DH the adjustment was kinda easy. For me it was terribly hard. However, I had moved straight out of my parents house to NC. We never lived on our own in NY. I was so homesick that I didnt give it a good chance and DH agreed to move back to NY. Although I love my family/friends here, moving back to NY was a big mistake. Had I lived here on our own and seen how hard it was before moving there, I never would have come back to NY.

3. Do you miss NYC terribly?
I did miss LI, but only because I missed family and friends. I didnt miss the traffic, the fear to honk your horn at someone because they will follow you and try to kill you, the general attitude of NY, etc.

4. Do you feel like the culture is really different in the place you live ( in a good way or a bad way) Do you feel isolated or different as a former NYC'er?

The culture was different, but in most ways it was good. It was less stressful. We were able to get by on one salary and DH wasnt even making much at the time. Having the lower cost of living made things a little easier. Things moved a little slower, but in a good way. DH's blood pressure and heart rate went down...we were actually healthier people down there. The only cultural issue I had was this...I didnt always get a warm welcome from people who grew up there. For instance, I was told by someone that I wasn't like other NY-ers because I was nice. I was doing my externship for my masters while down there and wanted to get a part time job. I went to a dept store and asked a worker there where personel was. They told me, and I quote: "we dont hire yankees". Other than that though, no issues...lol
