Quarantining and Drinking

Not here to flame or judge but all I see on social media is how people are drinking all day and all night. Maybe because I am working and don’t want to feel crappy in the morning when I need to work but nothing has changed for me with just my weekend drinking.
I actually saw a woman say it was 8am and she was drinking a 7 and 7 already.

I’m not a big drinker so it hasn’t really affected me, but I know that this is a really difficult time for a lot of people. The unfortunate thing is that a lot of negative behaviors are on the rise - alcoholism, suicide, domestic abuse, etc. I’ve seen posts in various groups with information on how to get help if needed.

I think it's a bad habit to get into, just to cope. I have not had one drink. But I am not a drinker to begin with. I also think some people think it sounds trendy or cool to say.

I drink almost daily anyway. I grew up in a house where we have wine with dinner.

Re: Quarantining and Drinking

During my divorce, I drank— A LOT. It started to become a problem. After the divorce was over, it took about a month to moderate myself back down to what I was before the divorce and drink responsibly. I even took a full month off months after the divorce.

Around the beginning of this quarantine, I started to see the same pattern emerge. I said to myself, this is just making me feel more anxious. I do not want to come out of this a full blown alcoholic. So I have cut down a lot. I limit myself to a bottle or two of wine on the weekend. That’s it. That’s all I have in the house, and I don’t want to leave my house, so problem solved.

Seeing the posts of people drinking all day makes me cringe. I know that feeling, and before you know it you can become psychically dependent on it. That’s not a walk in the park at all.

I was not a huge drinker to begin with. Wine here and there once a week at most. My husband is a beer drinker and he has been keeping it going lol. He bought me some white claw seltzer’s which I tried but they are horrible honestly. I don’t know what it is with those things but they caused an immediate headache and did not feel buzzed at all. Just a gross headache. I am refraining at this point. It doesn’t make me feel better about things and I don’t think this is the time to do it. I think when you are depressed and stressed and down about things that is the worst time to do it...

Kind of the same for me. My parents always did and still do have a glass of wine a night.
Before this I would go out with friends or coworkers once a week or every other week for a drink. I'd have a drink or 2 on Saturday night when we'd go out to dinner.
I wouldn't drink every night though.

When this started I found myself having a glass of wine or a cosmo or margarita almost every night out of sheer boredom and then it became a habit.

But it kind of made me feel like shit and made me tired and made my anxiety worse at times.
So i cut back.

And i definitely don't day drink.

I never used to drink at home unless I had people over. I used to go out to dinner most nights - probably 4-5 nights a week. Sometimes I’d have a glass of wine when I was out, sometimes not. On the weekends usually 2 with dinner. Or if I went out with friends, maybe a couple of drinks out at a bar. Now I still don’t drink during the week being at home. But usually do a zoom happy hour Fridays and Saturdays - the most I’ve had during any of those is 2 drinks/glasses of wine. Definitely not drinking during the day

I don’t day drink, ever (just not my thing), but DH and I drink wine pretty much every night with dinner. No increase or decrease due to corona. But neither of us are drinking while working - I can’t even imagine!

I can’t day drink because I’m working.

Normally I’d only really drink on weekends but now I’ll have an occasional drink at night if I finish working at a normal hour.

Quarantining and Drinking

I think if I was day drinking I’d tell off my boss and that would be no good...

I’ll have a glass of wine or beer with dinner 2-3x a week but that’s normal for me.

I am not drinking during the day during the week but I am definitely drinking more than usual. In the beginning I progressed to a bottle of wine over the course of a night. Then I got on the scale and was like WTF. Now, I will have a glass of wine with dinner maybe 2 nights of the week and then Friday, Saturday and Sunday I do happy hour so I'll have a few. I would day drink but on the weekends only.

Pre-quarantine, I would only drink on Saturday nights. On occasion, Fridays.

I was laughing at my college roomate last weekend. When we were in college, we used to pre-game while we were getting ready to go out. She texted me that she was having a "shower beer" on Friday night. I forgot about those great days. Good for her for bringing that back. LOL

I haven't been drinking all day or getting drunk, but I have been having 1 drink pretty much everyday. My husband usally has a beer when he comes home & I get home later, so I finally feel like I am around for "home happy hour." It has been helpful to have something to mark the end of the day since I am not commuting.

There have only been a few times when I had a few drinks in 1 day--but that is how it would be if I went out.

Quarantining and Drinking

I feel horrible admitting this, but on my nights off from work I'm definitely enjoying a few beers. It adds up. I don't necessarily get drunk. But I have 2-3 drinks per night and that adds up throughout the week. I justify it by working out and going on runs but i really need to give it up and just have one or two nights instead of 3 or 4. I'm stressed. All I see is death lately. I just watched a 19 year old die (not covid...). It was AWFUL. My god its awful. A beer or two makes me unwind and i love that feeling. I can now kind of understand how people abuse it.

same here, except it was beer, my dad is German, and always had a beer with dinner.
I have found myself drinking a few more than I should, and was not sleeping well. So, I cut back, and sleeping better.

Re: Quarantining and Drinking

I'm sure some people are actually drinking, but I'm sure some people are just reposting things they think are funny. Every time I see a hilarious meme about day drinking or quarantine drinking, I repost it. I still only have 1 or 2 glasses of wine per week and that's it. I'm sure everyone thinks I'm doing nothing but drinking if you look at my social media Chat Icon

I mean if you don't have kids and you don't have to work from home then you can day drink every few days or so. Maybe they aren't night drinking too. I'm sure the parents and people working from home though aren't day drinking all day, every day. It would be impossible to get anything done.

I think people on social media are just posting things because they are funny. I know I have posted a few meme's about drinking and I don't drink at all in my house. Now if I had no kids and did not have to work, then it maybe a different story but I'm too old to nurse a hangover!!

Do not feel awful and do not let the people on here saying they don't drink make you feel bad! Trust me, most are lying, I know some of them. I proudly drink almost everyday. I've always had wine with dinner. And the days I am not going into the office, I'm an essential worker but we are working a rotating schedule, I will totally day drink maybe once or twice a week by having a beer in the afternoon or maybe some Baileys. I'm an adult, home and not getting drunk. And honestly, day drinking is the best! Normally that is only a summertime thing, but I think during a pandemic you can make an exception. Nobody is saying you should abuse it , but if you aren't an alcoholic and not driving or taking care of kids, do what you need to feel a bit better. And really this is just a cray period of time like we have never experienced before and hopefully it won't happen again in our lifetime.

I don't know if they are lying per se, but doctors know you are lying, lol. When they ask at your appointment how much you drink, they usually double it in their head. Chat Icon

Quarantining and Drinking

I've never been much of a drinker. My mom is a functional alcoholic so that is always in the back of my mind.

With that said, I usually drink 1-2x a month when I visit my family on LI. So during a visit, I will drink 2-3 glass of wine on Friday and Saturday night. Currently, I am drinking maybe 1-2 glasses of wine a week.

I probably drink 4 -5 days a week. Some nights a glass of wine while cooking and that's enough.
I usually don't start till after 5 though and on weekends if it's nice we do happy hours with the neighbors outside.

On vacation and especially if it's an all inclusive I probably start drinking earlier.

I mean... I'm not driving anywhere. As long as it doesn't become an issue nothing wrong with some drinks
