Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

I'm doing both bfing and formula. When I'm not getting that much milk.

How much milk are you usually getting?

Is there a way to increase my milk production?

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

I only get 3 ounces max from both boobs combined. I EBF so I am hoping that is just the excess milk, and not what I will get next week when I go back to work FT.

I have been eating oatmeal. I also bought mother's milk tea. Truthfully I can't tell if they are helping.

DD pediatrician gave me a rx today for reglan (?) to help stimulate milk production. I don't like taking prescriptions unless I have to so I am going to see how it goes next week first.

Almost 2 oz per breast each feeding. BUUUUUUT DD was in NICU so that was instead of feeding all of the time.

I had to take reglan to help get over a stomach bug that I caught recently and wow does that thing increase milk production! I jumped from 6 oz per pumping session to 10 oz while I took it! I'm not on it anymore now that I'm feeling better and my production has gone back to 6 oz a session. I won't complain though Chat Icon

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

I get around 10-18 oz a day or 6-8 oz per session. I eat a huge bowl of oatmeal everyday and sometimes I take fenugreek.

Are you drinking a lot of fluids? Are you eating enough? Both play a major role. Also when you pump do you have it on the highest level that you can handle? You need to b/c this mimics the baby's sucking the best.

When I first started pumping I was lucky if I got 2 oz a day...I BF exclusively & I had a hard time finding time to pump & it definitely wasn't doing it on a regular basis.

When I went back to work at 10w we started giving him 2 expressed 4 oz bottles a day & I was suddenly able pump 8 oz a day easily. I started taking fenugreek & increased my water intake & since then the amount has slowly increased. We now give him two 5 oz bottles on work days & I'm pumping between 10 & 13 oz a day (I double-pump twice a day for 10 minutes a session).

ETA: I've found that drinking LOTS of water helps...the days I drink less, I pump less. I also eat oatmeal occasionally "just in case" but I'm not so sure that it's helped me personally...

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

Make sure you're drinking plenty of water and eating enough calories. Oatmeal can help too. If you want to increase your supply, try Mother's Milk Tea or More Milk Plus. If you're not BFing, the best thing you can do is to pump at least as often as DC eats.

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

I only pump in the morning after I nurse Colin. He isn't STTN yet so I only get about 6oz that session - but I pretty much can freeze it everyday (if I need to use milk b/c I go out, I pump when I get home and am able to replace the bottle he took). I started pumping at 6 wks PP to start a freezer stash - I have about 250 oz so far, hoping to have about 350 oz before I return to work.

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

I have not gone back to work yet but trying to build up my supply, I have been BFing and giving DD formula. I try to pump every night before I go to bed. I usually get 4-5oz total. I take Fenugreek supplements and I drink plenty of water. Hopefully when I go back to work it picks up. Changing the setting to higher on the pump definitely helps.

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

I have been exclusively pumping since DS was 10 days old. In the beginning I was just barely pumping enough to feed him. It took about 5 weeks for my supply to increase. DS is now 12 weeks and is eating 30 oz a day and I am pumping about 35 oz a day (between 6-8 oz a session). I could probably get more if I were to pump an extra session, but I just don't want to...5 times a day is enough! I feel that to get the most milk, the pump has to be at the highest level and I really have to squeeze my breasts hard. Fluid intake is def important, too.

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

I used to get about 6oz per session. DS is 9 months now & thanks to solids, I'm only getting about 3oz per session. I only work PT & he loves solids, so he's not taking that much more than I'm pumping anyway, but I just started takng Fenugreek anyway.

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

When I started pumping, I would only get about 2 oz a per session. Now that I am back to work, DS gets 2 6oz bottles a day, and I get about 3-5 oz combined at each pumping session. I use a hospital grade pump which helps, eat oatmeal and have found fenugreek to be great!

Hope that helps-I always say to keep going if you can, it def gets better! Chat Icon

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

I pump 10 oz a day sometimes a little bit more. I eat oatmeal 2/3 times a day and drink mothers milk tea like it's going out of style. Chat Icon DS cluster feeds so he is on me just about every hour every night or day. Sometimes both.Chat Icon

I freeze 5 oz and the other 5 I put in a bottle for DS's bedtime feeding that DH does.

I pump one breast while I BF with the other. At the next feeding I swap and go back and forth. I do this up until 3/4 pm when DS goes down for his nap. I always pump in the early am 4/5 when DS wakes up. I feel like that is when I get the most BM. I drink a TON of water. I notice that that really helps in the milk production.

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

Well because you are doing both it can effect your milk supply but if that's what works for you than one thing is you will always produce more milk at the breast than with a pump. Also make sure you pump an extra 4 to 5 minutes after your done to stimulate your supply further. The type of pump is also important it should be a hospital grade or something close.

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

I pumped for a few days and was only getting 1 oz if i was lucky from both sides combined. i gave up. No wonder why DD was so hungry when I was BFing!

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

When I was pumping I got about 4-5 oz typically (combined). If I didn't pump overnight I would get about 8 oz in the morning.

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

Hey April...congrats!!!

At this point DS is 8 months & I'm exclusively pumping. I pump 3x a day & get about 9-12 oz. per session.

In the beginning though it was much lower; it took 3 weeks or so for the amount to go up from a couple of ounces (w/ DD). Hang in there. The oatmeal truly helps, as does fenugreek (if you don't mind smelling like maple syrup! Chat Icon )

Like the others said too, drink lots of fluid. Good luck!

Re: Pumping Moms-How much milk are you getting?

It depends, but on average 30-35oz in 24hrs and about 10-15 extra for the freezer so 40-45oz. I get about 10oz in the 1st pump of the day in about 15min. I could get more, but only pump for 15-20min at a time.

Edited to add today's pumping sched...

0500 8oz 10min pump
1000 10oz 20min pump
1215 5oz 15min pump
1430 5oz 10min pump
1630 5oz 15min pump
1845 4oz 10min pump
2210 8oz 20min pump
0015 5oz 20min pump

I still have my 0230 or 0300 pump left so in total 48oz today....

I have the original PIS backpack double pump. I take no herbs and do not eat oatmeal. I guess i'm just lucky
