we don't make a TON but we are certainly making more than quite a few of our couple friends struggeling to make it in NY.

even if you make less... if you can buy a house for 1/2 of what it costs here, you're already ahead of the game.

you certainly can.
Not that our house is a mansion. But we have a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house. It's 2000 heated sq feet, we have a good sized backyard and a fairly large pool.
We got the house for less than 200k.
Unimaginable in NY

ETA- Our taxes are only 2k per year.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?

I wouldn't move out of state at this point in my life. DH and I lived in Ireland and I missed my family and friends too much. I wouldn't want to leave again. To me the only pro to moving out of state would be to have a bigger house and probably newer with cheaper taxes. Other than that I don't see any other positive things. Most of the other costs of living aren't that different. Food, gas, clothing, eating out, movies aren't all that much cheaper than LI if not the same price. I know not in all cases, but most of the time you make less money than in NY. So to me, here your housing costs are higher but your salaries are higher. Plus, NYC is the most diverse city and has so much to offer. I know I would miss the restaurants, theater, the skyline everything!

PROS: cost of living is less, people are friendlier down south, pace of life is slower, less stressful to keep up with "the Joneses", the weather is GREAT

CONS: miss my family and few friends I had back in NY.

I DEFINTIELY found this to be the case outside of NY. I know this is a generalization, but I found people to be less materialistic outside of NY.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?

I can teach in any state, but not for as much money (yes I would need less to live, but my debt stays the same....student loans, car loans etc.)
Dh can practice law anywhere, but the better jobs are here.
I totally would move out of state if it wasn't for these major cons.
Plus, Dh love loves loves new york! I will be stuck here forever!Chat Icon

Cons:
1. Attitude of out of staters- I have a very liberal outlook and don't have much patience for backwoods attitudes- yes even in Florida.

PS- We almost moved to Florida where DH's family is.

I don't think we can generalize that all other states have backwoods attitudes (FL yes, but not all other states LOL). We are looking at NJ and CT, which are in many ways more liberal than NY. So is VT and many other states. Long Island is actually the most conservative area I've ever lived in (having grown up in college towns). There are plenty of other places that are the same proximity to NYC but cheaper.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?

No...

1. I am a public school teacher and I'd take about a 50% paycut in most other states. And my pension etc. I know what you are thinking lower cost of living. I did the math it doesn't add up for me ove rthe course of my lifetime I'd be losing a lot of money

2. My Dad is disabled from a stroke and I am needed here to help care for him.

3. DH's parents live in our town and to be honest the older we get (mid and late 30's) the more we realize how important it is to have family around to help each other. Both of his sisters live out of state so someday we will care for them as well.

4. As an educator, LI has school districts that are some of the best in the country. My SIL and her kids live in a affluent college town in another state... despite the town being dominated by a university, etc. she is very unhappy with their school district. There are many states whose schools are so bad I would NEVER send my kids there. As far as I see it, I equate my property taxes with my future kids tuition payments.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?

We can never move out of state for a few reasons:
1. when we have kids, my dad will act as day care (doesn't get cheaper than free!)
2. i love being close to family
3. i lived off of LI for a few years and never really felt comfortable anywhere else
4. my husband loves to fish so we have to live near water, but i hate the sun, so we can't live anywhere that's sunny all year long
5. as a teacher, I would may waaaaay less money enywhere else!
and we both love Long Island, so we would never want to move. If it means we have to pay more money to have a house...then so be it!Chat Icon

For us,

Pros- Cost of living;real estate;for me I am now closer to my parents, weather,

Cons- DH is finding it harder to get acclamated. (His family are all in NY), miss bagels, authentic delis, diners, pizza, italian, miss the energy of NYC!!

Unsure if this will be a permanent move. Ill keep you posted.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?

Well I've been living in Florida with my Husband since July and we actually like it alot and it has been good to us. However, the con is we miss our family. Since I am expecting our first child we are moving home in 2 1/2 weeks so we can be close to the family for a bit.

I know my dad wants to move out of state when we retires, and DH's parents want to move also. So we may move out of state again in the near future.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?

Just to clarify...you're talking about relocating our of LI - NYC metro area...???

Because the "pros" of cheaper taxes & housing can be done in NY...just not LI areas.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?

While I would lovet o be able to afford a big house and a lot of property, I don't foresee moving out of the NYC metro area. FH is a computer programmer and there are just a LOT more jobs in his field here than anywhere els,e except for the west coast. For the jobs I've been looking at, I could really work anywhere, but my long term goal is to get my MFA and become a theatre director, so it's important to stay close to NY. And while we have to live for ourselves, for ourselves, we want to be close to the family and friends we love.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?

DH and I are moving out of state the beginning of 2007. My sister and brother in law have lived down south for like 5 years. They love it. My parents finally decided to leave New York and they are building a house by my sister. My other sister and brother in law live in PA and aren't happy there so they have decided to move down south. DH and I just don't want to waste our money here and live for a mortgage so we decided to move also. The end of April we are going down to sign a contract to build a house. It is going to be a 4 bedroom, 2000 sq foot house for under 200k. For me the pros definitely outweighed the cons. The cons for me is that I really like my job here and that DH's family is in NY.
