Jill is the 50mm lens the same as the "Nifty 50"?

For some reason the autofocus is kinda wonky on it. Not sure if there's something wrong with my lens or the 50 mm in general, but it's been that way since I got it. .

I have that lens too, and have the same problem with auto-focus.

Great pictures ladies!

I'm glad to know it's not me! I was just starting to think I did something to it to make it that way! I took pictures of the pink ombre cake that I made for my sister's birthday and they are TERRIBLE! So blurry because I was in a rush and just auto-focused it. WAH! Now I'm just going to have to make the damn cake all over again and it was a PITA! LOL! My hand is STILL cramped from it.

How sad is this story? Chat Icon

Re: Project 365!!!

It looks to me like it was very low lighting which may have made it harder for your autofocus to get an accurate focus point. If you had it set on program mode to automatically set the shutter speed it would have given you a slow shutter speed under low light conditions too and trying to hand hold under low light would likely give you a bit of motion blur. Harsh lighting overhead is giving you lack of definition on the top and darker shadows on the sides and underneath too.

Tips to help next time, use a tripod if available. If not, try leaning against a counter or wall, spread your feet and keep your elbows close to your body to increase stability. I like to use my left hand to cradle under the camera and lens instead of just grabbing the left side, I find it more stable. If it's daytime, position the cake near a window (but not in direct sunlight) to get additional light. Have someone hold a large white panel (foamcore board, poster board, even a bed sheet) opposite the window to bounce light back. You want to be close to your subject, just out of frame. If you're shooting at night you'll need to work with artificial light sources to get the shot.

Take a look at these quick tutorials on lighting for food photography. Hover over the pictures to see what each tutorial covers. The Tomato at the top and the one right below it should give you some good ideas.

The cake looks yummy! I hope it tasted just as good. I look forward to seeing your next photo attempt on the cake, round 2.

Yeah, the lighting in my house is terrible! Normally when I'm taking photos I go dragging all the lamps I have into one room and just wing it. lol! But I didn't have time to this time. Boooooooo! I'm going to check out those tips though! Thank you so much for sharing! Chat Icon

Here's my photo for today!

There were these steel footprints going over the metal subway grates. Looked cool and I followed them because I HATE walking on those grates.

And then a bonus pic! I just saw this display on the corner where the Roger Smith Hotel is. It's just all giant bear statues. I liked the smoochy ones.

Re: Project 365!!!

Wanted to share some photos from my recent trip to DR. I don't know why I waited so long to post these here! Just a few of my fave shots!

The .45 mile long pool. Swoon.

External Image

I just loved the reflection of the trees in the pool.
External Image

Turtle.
External Image

They had flamingos at the resort! And you could feed them!
External Image
External Image

This was the coolest bird. We were feeding bread to the ducks and flamingos and this bird would steal pieces of bread, but not to eat. He'd drop the bread into the water and wait until a fish tried to snatch it and then he'd grab the fish! It was amazing. DH and I stood there for 20 minutes trying to snap this pic! lol!
External Image

For some reason boarding/exiting the plane via stairs was the coolest thing in the world to me.
External Image

The whole airport in general was really cool. It was very open and resort-like. This was the view from the food court!
External Image

ETA: These are all taken with my Canon Rebel XS with the kit lens.
