I'm not sure what it is related to my takehome, but you shouldn't go over 30% of your gross salary on home expenses (mortgage/taxes/insurance).
The reason you go gross salary in these scenarios is because your taxes and mortgage interest are paid with gross income (pre-tax).

the mortgage is about 13% of our gross income not including maintenance fees or insurance. If I add those in it is 14%. We are saving for a new house and I think that will be about 20-25% of our gross income.

Is it pre-tax since it's tax deductable? Otherwise we pay our mortgage (and interest and taxes and insurance) with taxed money.

Our mortgage payment is about 30% of our NET take-home pay each month.
We were VERY careful when buying our house in NC. It's so easy to go over your "safe" spending limit for a house, because you're starstruck by how much house you can actually afford. We saw a house that we loved that was $30,000 more than our upper limit. As much as we loved it, we wound up erring on the side of caution.
I'm REALLY glad we did, because that mortgage bill comes at the end of the month, and it's a comfortable, manageable payment.

I did ours based on DH's salary, but he also gets a nice bonus each year which I didn't include in the calculations.
