Please help, I can't take the dog hair anymore!!!!

Ok, so most of you know we have two dogs and we love them to bits and pieces but I can't take having the dog hair around EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME!!!! Chat Icon

It's all over my clothing, my sheets, my furniture, the carpet... you name it.

I could honestly vacuum 5 days a week and I still think there would be hair.

I think the thing that gets me the most is how it's on my clothing. I've tried everything but it just won't come off - especially my knits.

Can anyone reccommend a solution? I can't take it anymore.Chat Icon

There isn't one that I know of. That's the only reason I don't miss having cats, and love that I have non shedding dogs. The things we put up with for our pets!Chat Icon

Keep the dogs off of the furniture and out of your bedroom .......

I don't mean that to sound snarky - it's really the only way to 'control' the dog hair

Do you have a furminator? I know they are expensive, but Murray sheds sooo much less since we started using it on him.

Like I only need to clean my couch off once a week instead of every day better.

No, you're right... I *know* I shouldn't let them up on the couch or bed at all but I do. What can I say? I'm a sap and I love snuggling with them. I just don't love the hair being everywhere. I'll admit it, I want my cake and eat it too! Chat Icon

But in their defense, it's not so much on the bed and I'm not sure about the couch - though it doesn't seem too bad. I notice it more on our hardwood floors if anything.

It just seems like they're always shedding and they're both tight haired dogs I didn't think they'd shed this much KWIM?

I guess there really isn't much I can do about it so every now and then I need to bytch and moan about it and then get over it! Chat Icon

Jennie, get a ROOMBA. I swear it REALLY HELPS control the fur balls. Doesn't replace a "real" vacuum but it will keep a handle on the tumbleweeds day to day. I know they even make a pet version now. I think they run around $250 or so, but seriously the do a great job. the dogs might be afraid of it at first (which is hilarious to watch) but they'll soon make peace with it.

How often do you brush them? Brushing might help in cutting down the amount of shedding they do... won't eliminate it, but it might help.

Exactly what I was going to say. We don't have to vaccuum every single day anymore since we got our Roomba. It doesn't get everything, but it's SO much more manageable now.

The only other thing I can think of is brushing the dogs more often while they're shedding and using those sticky roller sheets to get the hair off the couches. I know how you feel, it makes me crazy too.

Jennie we use this as well everyday for Katie. She sheds SO MUCH. We still need a regular vaccuum but that's just for the stairs. Also try brushing them often outside.Chat Icon

Thanks girls... I'll look into the Roomba, we're in need of a new vacuum anyway so maybe we'll take the hit.

I also don't brush them very much at all, I will start doing that. I guess I thought since they have pretty short/tight hair that they wouldn't need to be brushed very often or shed as much as they do.

Re: Please help, I can't take the dog hair anymore!!!!

Is this a constant thing, or do you notice it more now that it's drier? While we were figuring out Brinkley's skin problems, he shed like crazy and we were brushing him once a week with the Furminator. Now that we have him on potato & fish food and add supplemental fish oil and vitamin E to his food, his skin problems are all but gone and he doesn't shed at all when we pet him. We haven't brushed him in over a month. The vet said to be careful of brushing an undercoat rake like the Furminator when a dog has dry skin or skin issues.

Good luck with your solutions!

Re: Please help, I can't take the dog hair anymore!!!!

I don't get any hair on my hands when I pet them or anything, I think that's why I'm so blown away at how much hair I find on the floor or worse my sweaters! Chat Icon

From what I can see, they don't seem to have any kind of skin issues. No excessive scratching, no flaking, no rashes... Heck Shelby's coat is gorgeous. It's shiny and soft. Arnold's is more corse and less shiny but it's soft.

How did you guys find out or figure out that Brinkley had skin issues?

ETA: I never noticed the hair thing until recently like the last two weeks b/c I was home the entire time.

Re: Please help, I can't take the dog hair anymore!!!!

Good, then it's probably not the same thing. Chat Icon

His signs were pretty obvious - red itchy spots on his stomach and underarms, dandruff, dry skin, and of course, all the scratching and biting. We changed foods, wipe down his belly with hypoallergenic and alcohol free baby wipes when we know he's been laying in the grass, and add the fish oil/vitamin e to his food. He's pretty much "cured". For now. But anything can happen with the change of season, so we're paying close attention.

That's not to say he doesn't shed... I'm on my hands and knees with the Dyson and the attachments every week, under the couch, in corners, where the carpet meets the wood molding... But we only have one! I'm sure your situation is different, worse.

If it's always been that way and maybe you haven't noticed as much before, I guess you just have to find the best vacuum and deal. If it's a phase, maybe it will lessen when it gets warmer?

Re: Please help, I can't take the dog hair anymore!!!!

I find it's also difficult w/ hardwood floors b/c it's not as easy to get the hair up w/ the vacum - it flies all over the damn place !! - It happens to me w/ dust (my dog doesn't shed)

Before you invest in the roomba, try to swiffer the hardwoods every day to catch the hair and see if that helps at all ....
