just curious, how old is ur niece?? my friends did this in the summer, and i wont tell u my opinion bc im mostly vegetarian, so i ws obviously distraught but even my 210lb meat eating dh and my then 9 year old who lovesssshis bacon and eggs, were disgusted...id be alil careful, not everyone appreciates this..i would actually leave a party in the future with one...

to answer ur question though, they called a company in to help them...u have to build it all

Re: pig roast?

My best friend's family has been doing this since we were little. They get the pig from a friend - but most butchers will do it for you. Tell them what it's for and the butcher should ask you how much you want done. You will want to make certain the pig is.. cleaned out. Free of innards and split for roasting.

This is not an easy party to do and they prep for it weeks in advance. They have a tremendous backyard and fence off a small area in the extreme back corner where they have built a fire pit exclusively for this event. The pig takes HOURS to cook and they continually baste it.

Some people are completely disgusted by it - but it has been a part of a lot of folk's culture for years so it doesn't phase them. Most of the kids seem more curious than anything.. some get squeamish - but that's one of the reasons they have the pig out of the way of the main party.

It's a lot of fun - but kind of a melee. And to be totally honest.. I'd never do it because I can tell you that my friends spend the entire morning and afternoon taking care of work before they can actually get to relax. I am a little lazier than that!

Good luck!

Re: pig roast?

We did one for my 30th. I'll find out the name of the company for you. My dad and my husband set it up (their idea as I'm sure you can tell! LOL Chat Icon ). The spit roast was more expensive than doing the whole thing in a hot box, so we went for the cheaper option, but they took care of everything. A guy arrived a couple of hours before the party was meant to start and set up in a corner of the backyard. He tended to it the entire time, served people and then cleaned it up in the end. My entire family - little kids included - loved it, although some weren't interested in eating it. We did have lots of leftovers and we were about 20 people.

If you're interested in seeing some pics, FM me - get the impression some people might be offended if I posted them here!

I agree. It's not for everyone & it takes a lot of work. My BIL has done several.
