Do you boycott stores like Target and KMart too? Wouldn't they have to employ some of the same strategies with their overseas suppliers to get the low prices they get?

I'm not being a wisearese, I really don't understand the difference.

Re: People who don't shop at Walmart, can I ask a question?

In my industry, WalMart is the bad guy -- forcing down prices and making it difficult if not impossible for the smaller guys to compete.

I don't find this problem with the other super-chains in MY industry....so that's why I started to boycott them.

Since, I have learned of their despicable HR practices, which just adds to my reasons not to shop there.

I suppose the main reason I don't shop at Wal Mart is because there is none anywhere near my home or work.

But, their HR practices are pretty bad. Target and KMart may not be perfect, but they don't seem to have the same employee complaints. They don't seem to treat their executive staff much better either.

Also, frankly I like the quality of things you can buy at Target much better than any Wal Mart I have seen. The employees are usually much more pleasant and helpful too--to me, that's often a sign that the company treats it's staff well.

I don't shop at Walmart because I have yet to walk into one store that I liked.

I just don't like their stores so I'm not boycotting per se. It's a fringe benefit that I'm not supporting a corporation that I hear negative things about.

I have to be honest and say that I am informed enough about their HR practices (or other business practices) to make the decision to boycott.

I prefer Target.

Re: People who don't shop at Walmart, can I ask a question?

I think all large retailers have to rely on overseas suppliers for products, it's just the way things are now. My problems with Walmart are more related to what they do here in the US - how employees are treated, and how they crush local businesses. I don't think Target or Kmart are as bad when it comes to these things.

I lived in a rural area for a while that had a Walmart come in after I moved away and even the Kmart went out of business!

ETA - Unfortunately, I don't have all the facts that turned me off about Walmart in my head, I just know everytime I read something else about them, it confirms my decision not to shop there.

Target and Kmart do not follow the practices of Walmart. I shop at Target all the time. I have stop supporting Walmart about 3 years now.

Wal-Mart costs taxpayers more money. They find ways to deny employees benefits and they don't pay them enough to feed their families so employees must use government funded resources instead. Being that they are one of the largest private employers in the U.S., that makes a huge dent in those resources.

Not to mention that low-cost is generally low-quality. I'd rather not waste any money on things that will end up in our landfills sooner than they should.

Walmart employs notoriously despicable labor/HR practices. They have been sued a number of times for illegal attempts at breaking labor unions.

Here are a number of sites that get into some of the practices that are most egregious:

This is my reason as well as their violations of human rights.
They are a despicable organization and they have nothing but cheap crap.

I'm a union president. I don't shop in Walmart b/c of their HR policies. Target & KMart, while certainly far from perfect, are better to their employees.

I don't shop at IGA Supermarkets b/c they're not union. They are the only big chain grocer on LI that isn't union.

I don't shop at Walmart, simply because I don't like it. I dread going to Walmart or Kmart.
I shop at Target and love it! I think there quality is so much better, and the store is much cleaner.

Re: People who don't shop at Walmart, can I ask a question?

While Wal-Mart's practices are questionable to most.... From a business/logistics perspective they are brilliant. I read a few cases on them during my MBA program and the efficiency of their supply chain and distirbution is amazing.

I don't shop at wal-mart in the city bc all the stores are so messy and unorganized. I will go to Wal-Mart down south or when we got to Wisconsin.

agree. Walmart is the worst offender of all. The way they deal with suppliers is just disgusting. I would never shop there.

Many stores use overseas suppliers.

I won't shop there because of their employment practices, not because they are buying overseas supplies.

As an HR Manager & the wife of a union member, I won't step foot in one.
