Re: Overwhelmed by house?

Everyday!! We purchased my childhood home knowing it needed a lot of work. At this point we have put so much money and work into it and we still have so much to go. It feels like the work and projects will never end.

One of my main causes of stress its actually decorating the rooms when they are done. I can't commit to a design or find something that both dh and I love so the walls are fairly blank and the new furniture just sits there. I think I need a designer. I'm just so overwhelmed.

Overwhelmed by house?

We (DH and I) went from a 5 BR home to a 1BR condo in a high rise.

For us - best thing ever. We laugh at how our weekends used to be spent on home stuff. No more!

And we have so much less "stuff" - less clothing, less everything. It's refreshing!

Oh, and much easier to vacuum a smaller place Chat Icon which is important since we have a dog who sheds like it's going out of style!

Best of luck with your sale/purchase. You should strategize with your listing agent (when you choose one) about best way to handle your in-laws and showings for next month. In my experience limiting showings can be a real negative. May be best to list once they are gone and everything is settled.

Thank you for the advice - I think this will be the route we take. Plus gives us a bit more time to throw shit out.

To the other poster above - we're in Ozone Park, Queens.

Awesome! I would just say don't be afraid to get rid of stuff. Getting rid of stuff is hard, but you NEVER miss it once it's gone.

And one mistake I made was running out to buy new furniture before we lived in the new place. I rushed into buying pieces because I was so eager to get the new place set up, and I hated the furniture from our house and didn't want to bring it . But I ended up regretting some of the items a few months later. I think I would have been better off bringing our old furniture (even though it totally didn't go with our modern condo) and actually living in the new space for a while before decorating/furnishing it. I think maybe it helps to live in a space for a little bit to really get a feel of what will work in the space.

Congrats, it's so exciting and fun! Chat Icon

Re: Overwhelmed by house? UPDATE: We are really doing this!

this is sooo exciting! dh and I lived in a 1 br coop for 7 years, then we had ds and still lived there for another 4 years lol. we are currently renting a 2 br apt. and I can honestly say that I have no desire for a house. the amount of work, finances, etc. that go into it just seem so stressful. I definitely want a bigger apt. but that'll come down the road. and it's so nice to be able to just pick and go kwim? my dad has been pushing us to buy a house for like 5 years now, but we're just not interested...I'm really happy for you. you'll have all this extra time and wonder why you were in a house for so long lol.

Re: Overwhelmed by house? UPDATE: We are really doing this!

Thank you!!! We're really excited for this. It's a big step that most people would see as a backwards one, but for us, it's a leap forward.

Some people in our lives think we're crazy. I rattle off a list of things that a 100 year old house needs done and tell them that I would gladly stay there if they'd fix it all for me. Til then, shut yo trap.

Re: Overwhelmed by house? UPDATE: We are really doing this!

Congratulations!!!! I am very jealous! I would love to sell my house and move into an apartment in the city or the beach!

I don't even do a fraction of the home things, I have someone clean the house, have a gardener and still find it all overwhelming. I have very little down time and spending that time cleaning or doing yard work is not my idea of fun!

Congratulations. Port Washington LIRR line is a wonderful thing.
DH and I are doing the opposite, we are looking for a house and selling my co-op. Can't stand shared walls anymore.
