Online defensive driving course?
I saw a blurb about this on the news earlier. Has anyone done it? Can you rec. a particular company to use?

you can ask your agent what they take..my agent is mailing me a list of the online courses that they accept..hth

there are 4 schools accepted by NY State (and State Farm - that's the only first hand info I have) as of 5/18/09.
I have the list and links on my work computer, I'll post in an hour

there are 4 online companies that dmv recognizes and recommends. Allstate accepts them.
I am taking the course with USA Training Company. I liked the interface.

Insurance companies have to accept it since it is sanctioned by the NY State DMV- there is info on the DMV website in case your insurance company says that they do not accept it
You can take it through AAA and get a discount

10% off your collision, liability and no-fault and its good for three years
it also can reduce up to 4 points on your license if you have points hth

Thanks, I have Geico so I'll have to look into what they will accept. I have no points or accidents, but a discount on my insurance would be nice.

There was a post about this the other day. Not all insurance companies except the online courses. I have Geico and from what I gathered on the past post, they dont accept it.

No thats not the case- they are mandated by the state of NY to accept the course- if anyone has issues- you should cite the DMV Press Release from 5/18/09

Who are you taking it through- it should be a 6 hour class- like the classroom version
USA Training Company. I completed the online reading very quickly and they make you wait to review the material for exactly the time allotted. So if you finish quicker you still have to wait for the time to be up. Each read is about 30-40 minutes and then 1 minute 4 question tests. It's about 8 hours worth.
I just checked the times on my course and it comes to about 5 1/2 hours. It seems much longer though. Also the times it tells you it took you to complete the online reading and quizzes is about double. I think that's wrong.
So I will finish a 36 minute read in about 18 minutes and it will tell me to review the material for another 18 minutes. grrrrrrr...

Well if anyone else has TSC Direct apparently they do NOT accept online courses. I fired off an email to them asking about the new DMV approved online courses and this was their reply:
Thank you for your recent e-mail to TSC Direct.
We do not accept on-line courses.
The following is a list of organizations that you can contact to schedule the course:

Empire Safety Council 800-246-3603
NY Safety Program 800-942-6874
Driver Training Associates 800-243-2196
