I know we are NY'ers and not coal miners. So WHY am I posting this? Because I feel it is important to know that Obama lied bout this, NO ONE called him on it until NOW b/c he is the media's " golden child" and his willingness to put thousands of Americans out of work by bankrupting an entire industry. Exactly HOW is that "being my brother's keeper" when thousands would be out of a job in these hard economic times? I thought Obama wanted to create jobs? 
This is really disturbing to me. Obama lies about his stance on coal technology and the SF chronicle does not release the tape until the weekend before election day. Shame on you SF Chronicle...bad, biased journalism!!

I agree Dina. I'm afraid to watch the election tomorrow- if Obama wins I may really cry.

LA Times refusing to release the tape about Rashid Kalidi (sp?)
Michelle Obama saying we are a "mean country"
His whole attitude about apologizing to the world for us- to me, he doesn't seem proud to be an American.

Agreed. Please listen to this again before posting it. That is not what he is saying. He personally is not bankrupting anyone, but companies that do not comply with the right practices will face fines, ie payments.

thank you for posting the audio..even though your editorializing of it is extremely misleading..
he does NOT state that HE was going to bankrupt the coal industry. his actual statement is this :
What I’ve said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else’s out there.
I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.
That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.
The only thing I’ve said with respect to coal, I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.
It’s just that it will bankrupt them.
SO THE REAL FACT IS THIS: IN FACT he is not opposed to the coal industry.. he is in support of taxing them for the greenhouse gas that will be put out because coal is not a clean burning fuel . By taxing them for the greenhouse gas that they emit he can generate money for alternative energy.. and so if someone want to run a solely coal powered industry THAT CHOICE will bankrupt them

So, he's already making plans to create more coal plants, and clean up the ones we have......
I'm definitely not saying he doesn't lie.... ALL politicians do, but he has no plans on bankrupting the coal industry....

Seriously can you please find some more straws to grasp at...geeez!!!
Obama's cap & trade program would allow companies to purchase credits at auctio, and if their emissions were higher than those credits allowed, they would have to pay more. If there emission were less they could sell those credits to other companies.
This is to ensure that we explore other alternatives to energy and that the biggest polluters pay the most.
I mean seriously can you be anymore of an alarmist!
I know the coal industry is big in PA and McCain needs PA desperately to win, so it does not surprise me that they are scraping the bottom of the barrel still at this late hour.

What we have learned over this year is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback and let me tell you something, For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I have seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues. It has made me proud.
IN fact she clarifies that she was NOT proud just because Barack did well. she's proud because of the hunger this country feels for change.. that she has pride in the fact that hope is making a comeback.. an honestly..i see what she's talking about.. we've been beat down for so long by the lies that led us into war and over 4500 men dead, a republican president can sit and watch without so much of a care while an entire city floats a way big corporate companies getting bonuses while working people lose their homes it's hard to have pride..

I could not disagree more. Personally, back in 1992 -- the first presidential election after I turned 18 -- I had a lot of hope for the man from Hope. MANY people felt the same way.
I'm too young to really remember first-hand details before that, but I think people saw a lot of hope in Carter and Reagan, as well.
