Re: NYS Tests - Opting In or Out?
We opt out every year. DD is in 4th.
ETA - Opting out is strongly encouraged by our district.

Re: NYS Tests - Opting In or Out?
my DD is in 8th grade. She is in advanced so taking the earth science and algebra regents so they don't have them take the state tests. She is taking the ELA. She has taken the state tests every year

NYS Tests - Opting In or Out?
My kids have always taken the tests. In fact, my son qualified for extra help in school based on his low ELA scores.

Re: NYS Tests - Opting In or Out?
I dont' have to worry about it until next year- dd is only in 2nd grade- but I have no idea what I will do. I guess I will decide when it gets closer.
I don't think she needs to take them if they are as pointless as they say, and I don't want to put unnecessary stress on her, but then again, if it doesn't hurt to take it, maybe she should?
I'm just torn

NYS Tests - Opting In or Out?
They are basically used to evaluate teachers. We don't get the children's scores until the following year. They mean nothing. I do not even review my students scores. I make my own evaluation of them based on their classroom performance.

NYS Tests - Opting In or Out?
My child will be taking it every year. It helps prepare them for regents, SATs, ACTs etc... I see no harm in exposing kids to the rigor of the state exams, since they will need to be prepared for difficult exams in the future

I agree with this and is my way of thinking. My son has taken tests since kindergarten.

NYS Tests - Opting In or Out?
I have a few years before it is an issue but I do not think it is a bad idea to expose kids to state testing. I think it is a good idea to start young having children get use to taking tests and the only thing that can come out of them is possible some extra help so there is no reason to stress!
Unfortunately there are a lot of parents who are gung ho opt out and try to bully parents into opting their students out of the testing.
Regardless of what I end up choosing I am a big proponent for parents choice and not parents bullying.

Re: NYS Tests - Opting In or Out?
100% agree that it prepares them for high stakes testing. I work for the College Board and I am always struck by how close the question types on the SAT are to the questions my 3rd grader brings home. For example, areas like words in context and command of evidence which are keys on the SAT are showing up for my 3rd grader in his testing. He'll be taking the tests.

Re: NYS Tests - Opting In or Out?
I used to OPT him out, but when he gets to the junior high next year, he will be taking them. Once they get to the high school, they will not be given the choice of opting out.

See but that is one of my concerns. Why are 3rd graders being given tests that have questions that are similar to SAT type questions? I feel like it might be a developmentally inappropriate. I can see questions like that in Jr High maybe- to prepare for upcoming SATs. But in 3rd grade?

Re: NYS Tests - Opting In or Out?
My son is in 3rd grade so will be taking them this year. I have no reason for him to opt out. He doesn't mind taking them, doesn't get stressed or anything so I feel it'll be good for him and as PP said it helps them prepare for other tests.

They had state tests in Kindergarten in your district???
In his old catholic school they started the Terra Nova test (Private state school testing) in Kindergarten to get them used to taking state test. Not all schools did this.

Re: NYS Tests - Opting In or Out?
Yes , they would anyway but this year in particular it will be important in our district because there was an issue with another standardized test that was meant to be used for advanced placement. So this year the state tests will be a factor in advanced placement.

that is why my DD has always taken the tests. Honestly, she is not nervous about taking any test which is great. She has her first regents this year and she is not nervous at all about either of them.
