Re: NYS list of schools not in good standing

There are some school on that list that are solid schools. (ex: Forrest Hills HS)

They City and Sate of NY have 2 different sets of standing qualifications which makes it really difficult for concerned parents to understand by which standard the school has been evaluated.

Thanks for the list, though! It provides a great starting point!

Re: NYS list of schools not in good standing

Not surprised by the Suffolk list, the Nassau list, I was surprised by Osyter Bay E Norwich & Farmingdale.

I grew up in North Queens and some of those names I'm not surprised by (Bowne, Flushing HS) but I am surprised by Bayside HS. I was just talking to DH about how much we'd be saving in taxes if we stayed in Queens and he said we'd be paying a lot more to put 3 kids through private school.

Re: NYS list of schools not in good standing

Can someone explain to me what this really means?

It's appalling to see that mathematics and english are the majority of the issues.

Re: NYS list of schools not in good standing

Just a point of clarification, this list was for the 2006-2007 school year. Many schools have probably been removed from the list and it should be updated.

The list is based on the students' scores on state exams such as Regents exams. There are many things that these scores don't consider, for example a school may be in need of assistance because a certain percentage of students did not pass a particular Regents exam, however, other factors are not taken into account such as students with disabilities, ESL students and etc. There is so much more to this list than meets the eye.

Appalling maybe but somewhat accurate. Students today struggle a great deal in the areas of mathematics and English. Many students do not possess certain basic skills.

My son's elementary school is on there. I'm a little dissapointed, but I know he tries hard and does the best that he personally can.

Re: NYS list of schools not in good standing

I'm sorry, but students struggling in school is not primarily the school's fault. What is happening in these children's homes? No one is reinforcing what they learned in school apparantly. It is sad to see that kids in middle school and high school are struggling with math and english, but where are their parents? You cannot rely completely on the school to educate your child. You must be involved from day 1 and be there to help them daily. I live in one of the districts mentioned and people always have something to say about it, but if more parents were involved in helping their children, I bet that the list would be A LOT shorter.

I teach in a city middle school and we are on that list. It's really hard when the parents aren't involved. PTA attendance is terrible- 7-8 parents out of almost 600 kids. I have taught many of the same kids for at least 2 school years, some for 3, and I have never met some of the parents. And yet parents, the media, the mayor love to point fingers at the teachers.

I totally agree, I've said this a million times, Its mostly up to PARENTS. great teachers & great school should be a bonus not the only reason a child does well.
