E. Coli outbreak spreads to Long Island
Taco Bell possible source of the contamination

(Long Island - WABC, December 4, 2006) -
At least 11 cases of E. Coli have been reported in Suffolk County and at least three more in Nassau.
Eyewitness News has confirmed that eight Taco Bell restaurants in Nassau and Suffolk counties are being investigated for possible links to an outbreak of e.Coli on LI.
Four of the restaurants are in Nassau:
Roosevelt Field in Garden City
Broadway Mall in Hicksville
1634 Front Street in East Meadow
490 Peninsula Boulevard in Hempstead
The county has asked that these restaurants voluntary close pending further investigation.
The following Taco Bell restaurants have already been closed in Suffolk:
174 Medford Avenue in Patchogue
1937 Deer Park Avenue in Deer Park
4349 Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station
185 Old Country Road in Riverhead
One of the victims from Nassau County has reportedly been in the hospital for a week.
The outbreak began in New Jersey, where at least 24 people from eight communities were being treated. Half of those cases are linked to a Taco Bell in Middlesex County.
Two people are in critical condition this morning after an E-Coli bacteria outbreak in South Plainfield, New Jersey.
At least 22 other people are also sick. At least 17 of the victims are all under 18 years old.
The first illness was reported on November 17th and has affected people from eight towns in Somerset, Middlesex, and Monmouth counties.
The Middlesex County Director of health says his department is taking the matter very seriously.
David Papi: "It's very concerning, it's very concerning because it's serious and there's a large number of people that are involved in this and two are seriously ill."
Investigators are now focusing on a Taco Bell, where at least eleven of the sick ate. Food samples were taken from the fast food restaurant, but no E. Coli bacteria was found. Health experts say that could be due to the rapid turnover of food products.
The restaurant has been closed voluntarily since last Thursday, even though it passed a health code inspection last week.
Seven of those infected by the bacteria are still in the hospital this morning recovering from their symptoms.
Tom-Meka Archinard, M.D., University Hospital: "They develop something. All that called said they had cramping, diarrhea, nausea and it will affect your kidneys."
Symptoms of an E. Coli infection typically develop anywhere between one and 10 days after eating contaminated food.

OMG! That is horrifying! Come to think of it- Spinach had E Coli- so I guess it can come from anything.
I swear you can't eat anything lately!

I heard this on the news last night and of course I haven't had it in months....Until Saturday for lunch. I had the nachos and a chicken taco. I was freaking out! No more Taco Bell for us!
