no paid maternity leave or FMLA...

what to do? I know disability is 6 weeks and can be extended but damn the pay is low. Since my company has less than 50 employees I don't have FMLA.

Is there anything else that offers coverage/pay?

What's your plan?

my company of 500+ employees doesnt have paid maternity leave either - it stinks!
Try to save up sick & vacation time so use for part of the leave

Just save as much vacation time and money as you can now while you're still working.

I understand how you feel - the maternity "benefits" most people get in this country are an absolute disgrace. Chat Icon

Same situation here. Honestly save all your vacation time and save as much money as possible. Go down to bare necessities, pay minimum payments on all your bills and sock away the rest. You can go back to life as usual after you return back to work.

Re: no paid maternity leave or FMLA...

I was laid off a month before I had DS. So while I thought I would've had 12 weeks paid + another 6 with partial pay, I had 0! Plus no job to return to.

So my point is, you just never know. Save $$ as much as you can and just be prepared to dip into your savings.

If you were laid off, were you able to at least get unemployment?

no paid maternity leave or FMLA...

My only paid time is the sick time I have accrued - I think many jobs are like. Assuming I need no time off this year, I will have 31.5 days paid - the rest will be unpaid.

Re: no paid maternity leave or FMLA...

my job groups all vacation/sick/personal days together so we only get 12 per year and I can roll 5 days over.

Of course I am the guinea pig in this situation too with the first being pregnant working here Chat Icon

this really does suck. i would love 3 months off!

Re: no paid maternity leave or FMLA...

I will be getting my full pay for the first month of my leave. After that, disabilty for the remaining 2 weeks (6 weeks if I have vaginal)

After that nothing. I have no vacation days saved up - maybe a week and half by then.

We will just have to watch what we spend while I am out for the 3 months.

I have my unpaid FMLA but I will use my annual leave which by then should be 8+weeks but after that it will be just my dh's salary. My job does not allow me to use sick time for maternity leave

I'm in the same situation as you! Although my co only offers $150 wk for maternity, which isn't much. At least it's something though.

There is private disability insurance you can get on your own but must be in place for a certain amount of time before you are PG.

Many people don't get paid leave these days. Save.

Yep. I looked into it. You cannot have a baby within 10 months of signing up.
So that took care of that!

Honestly, it is save save save. If you can, live off of one salary and bank the other. If you can't do that then at least use as much of it you can to pay down debts and save the rest. Go on a no buy anything but absolute necessities.

Approximately what were the rates or are they based on your salary? Would you get your full salary?

Rates are based on a # of factors - how long you want to be paid while out, how much you want to be paid while out, your company's classification in their system, etc.
I pay $21.60 a week for AFLAC. It pays me 50% of my salary for 3 months with a 2 week waiting period. Your payment is made with a post tax contirbution, so the dispersements to you are non taxable.
You have to sign up for AFLAC before you are pregnant, you can not make a pregnancy claim within the first 10 months of enrollment.

i had no FMLA either and took 6 weeks STD. i had a horrendous premature birth and cause it was a csection STD gives 8 weeks. at the end of the 8 weeks i wasnt medically cleared to return to work. i ended up with a severance package and collected STD til 6m post partum at which point i was able to switch to unemployment for another year. money was very tight and it was totally traumatic losing my job in that fashion but it was totally legal. im only sharing this cause people dont realize that this CAN happen legally if you work for a company with no FMLA...
