NJ Car Seat Law Changes go into effect today!

And I hope that NY follows suit soon as well.
I LOVE this.
Rear facing until at LEAST 2 years old is now law!

5 pt harness until at LEAST 40 lbs!
However, my DD will be in it much longer.

The only issue I have is that my DS will be 10 and still not 40 lbs. Well not really but at 3.5 he is only 30 lbs so the weight thing would be tough for me. He is tall and super skinny. If I still had to have him rear facing we would never go anywhere cause he's scream his head off.

So DD is very small for her age and she is 5 and she is 40 lbs. I think by 5 your son will be around 40 pounds no? I plan to still keep her harnessed even though she is 40 lbs, and to be honest there is plenty of room in the seat still- she is quite comfy in there.

ETA_ oh and as far as the rear facing I think it means if they are under 2 years old AND under 30 lbs. I think if they are 2 years old and still under 30 you can move them forward facing.
I THINK that is how the law reads.

That is awesome. It amazes me how many people don't know about the rear facing recommendation. I have even seen people putting babies well under a year forward facing. I don't understand how you can have a child and not know these things. I thought all peds make their patients aware?

What kills me is little tiny kids in boosters with just seatbelts.
Like 3 year olds. And they look like they can slide right out of that seatbelt because they are small or they fall asleep and their position is just dangerous.
Gives me heart failure.
I don't get the rush.

one reason to love NJ Chat Icon Chat Icon

seriously its great that they did this and I hope NY follows very soon. the amount of people who don't know about car seat safety amazes me and it takes everything in me not to yell at every person I see who have their kid in the wrong seat or not strapped in correctly Chat Icon

Great for NJ but super frustrating that this type of thing is left up to each state to decide.

What if they're very big for their age? My DD is very tall for her age, and she hated being rear facing, so we chose to forward face her around age 18 months, when she was more like the size of an average 2.5 year old. I personally feel it made driving for our family more safe overall, bc she was calm facing forward, while the amount of screaming she did while facing backwards made me so nervous and on edge while driving.

I don't think size or height have as much to do with the law than the fact that before 2 years old, their spinal cords, etc are not as developed enough to withstand a crash forward facing.
It's more about development of the spinal cord, etc
I watched a video on it once and it is insane how much more force they absorb when forward facing than rear facing.

Exactly, their size has nothing to do with it. My DD is 21 months and weighs 34lbs and is 33 inches tall. It is about the physical development of the spine at their age. They are so much safer rear facing as long as possible. The things that can happen are so scary, like internal decapitaion and paralysis. I put a dvd player on the headrest for longer trips to keep her happy. I plan on keeping her backwards until at least 3.

Re: NJ Car Seat Law Changes go into effect today!

I thought NY already had the law that they are to be in rear-facing until they are 2???

Or is it until 1, but recommended until 2?

New York law states a properly used harnessed seat be used to 4 years/40 pounds. New seats on the market list a minimum of 2 to foward face, making it illegal to do so before that.

you are correct - in NY it is recommended until 2 but only a law until 1. After 1yo you can fwd face them if you want
Maybe NY will follow NJ and make it a law too...

It is NOT the law in NY that after 1 you can Foward face. If the seat specifically states may not be used foward facing until 2 (and whatever weight) then it is ILLEGAL in NY to do so since NY is considered a proper use state the way the actual wording of the law is.
