New Car Seat Law

Some of you may already have seen this but effective yesterday, November 24th, New York State has raised the age that children must be in a car seat to 8 years old.

Some are calling it a Booster Seat Law, but that is not totally correct. The law states that children under the age of 8 must be in a federally approved child safety seat. This can be a traditional 5-point harness or the booster seat.

The reason I do not call it a booster seat law is because many parents are changing their children to a booster sooner than they should.

Many of the seats on the market today can go above the old 40 pound limits. The longer you can keep a child in the 5-point harness, the safer they are.

Nassau County Traffic Safety will be keeping their fitting station open for the winter. Currently appointments are made for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 12:30 and 2:30.

We are exploring expanding to one Saturday a month but need to know if there is a need to do so. I need forum mail or comments here to justify the opening of a weekend day.

Call 516-571-1893. The phones and voicemail are fixed and working.

Re: New Car Seat Law

That's crazy...I mean, of course I want my kid safe and all- but 8?! Next they'll be in carseats til they're behind the wheel themselves.

Re: New Car Seat Law

Please understand that the majority of children are not tall enough to be in the car without a booster until they are 8.

The real problem is that too many parents move their children into the car without anything too soon.

I heard about this and was recently wondering what the rule is on school buses (and regular buses for that matter). How do they make school buses safe for kids? And can you just not bring your child on a regular bus?

DS is 6.5, and I know most of his 6-7yo classmates, and I can easily see all of those kids needing a booster for another year minimum. Without the booster, DS is way too short to have the shoulder strap lay the way it's supposed to.
We'll most likely keep DC in a booster well past 8. We treat the gov't minimums as MINIMUMS, and I always figure that I have a slightly more vested interest in DC's safety than the gov't, so I always keep them in the best possible seat as long as possible.
DC only moved to a booster from the 5 point harness on his 6th b-day.
