newborn acne--i could cry

my beautiful newborn daughter developed a HORRIBLE case of newborn acne yesterday. it's so bad that it looks like chicken pox.Chat Icon Chat Icon

i know there is nothing i could have done to prevent it or even treat it.

has anyone's newborn also had this? how long did it take to clear up? could the ped do anything?

i know it's only cosmetic and doesn't physically affect her, but i could cry every time i look at her face. i read it clears itself up by 6 MONTHS of age!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon the fact that it's her face and not her body makes it so much worse because it's the first thing you see

Re: newborn acne--i could cry

Ryan had it terribly. I thought leaving it alone and just rinsing with water was best. Until I really complained to the pediatrician and he said I should be washing it with warm water and soap to prevent more oils from backing up.

Sure enough, did that and it cleared up in 3 days!

My DD had it too! You're right, it is very common and it doesn't hurt them in any way. I would say it flared up around 6 weeks old and she had it for maybe 3 weeks tops. When she would cry, it would come out more and get darker. After a couple of weeks, her skin cleared up totally.Chat Icon

Re: newborn acne--i could cry

Carol - James had a TERRIBLE case of it. I cried every time I fed him a bottle and had to see his little face all marked up. As shallow as it sounds, it was embarrassing. I felt like I had to mention it first when people saw him before they commented on it. Chat Icon

It popped up when he was 16 days old and lasted through 6 weeks. After that, his skin cleared up but then he developed an allergy to his formula which left him ridiculously rashy all over his face. Couple this all with the cradle cap he had on his forehead and it was UGLY!

I had HORRIBLE acne when I was a teen and was constantly made fun of because of it. I think that's why I was so self-conscious about his little face.

Have faith that it WILL go away - maybe not for another few weeks, but eventually her skin will be perfect. Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I know the feeling well, my friend!

My doctor told me to gently rub Cetaphil on his face - don't mix it with water, just put the cleanser on a cotton ball and gently rub it on his face and leave it on there. Believe it or not, it worked! Chat Icon

Re: newborn acne--i could cry

Tyler had that and so did Derek a little. The best thing you can do is wash his fash with baby soap and water. It clears up within a few days. It's because of the extra oils in their skin.

Sometimes it is actually not acne but rather seborrheic dermatitis. Both my DC had it and the ped had me put hydrocortisone on it and it when away in a couple days.

how did you know the difference? or did the ped figure it out?

okay...i just checked my cabinets---i have cetaphil cleanser and lotion. so should i wash her face with warm water and then gently rub in the cleanser? or just wash her face with the cleanser?

yes, DS went through a "ugly duckling" phase. It started at 1 month and lasted until right before 3 months.

Re: newborn acne--i could cry

My DD had baby acne as well, and I felt sooooo bad for her, I know it didnt bother her, but it bothered me. My pedi said that it's at it's worst around 1 month of age, once she reached 1 month it went away, and she also told me to lather her face with aquaphor. I was surprised by that thinking it will make it worst b/c it's greasy, but she said it's the opposite it's b/c there face is dry , and that helped A TON!!! good luck, now my DD face has such a beautiful peachey complexion...

Re: newborn acne--i could cry

Awe... she's beautiful! This is something that will go away on it's own. Mason had it so bad too. It came when he was around a week or two and then completely went away when he was about a month old or maybe it was just a week after he was a month. Chat Icon
Oh, and as soon as he cleared up I completely broke out. It was the weirdest thing. I had it bad for a month and then Mason was fine. Thank goodness we're both clear. Chat Icon Well, for me... I guess it depends on "the time of the month"

Oh, and you know he has that raspberry on his forhead... I don't even see it anymore.

My DS had it too. I know what you mean about feeling like you have to explain why your DC has a red rash on their face. It really isn't a big deal though. My DS had it starting at about 2 weeks old, and I'm pretty sure it was gone by 5 or 6 weeks old.

ds got it pretty bad and then he got cradle cap around his nose, forehead and around his ears. he then got some pretty bad dry scaly spots on his cheeks and chin - i had no clue it was cradle cap and went to the ped - he gave me a steroid cream and within a day and a half EVEYTHING cleared up - acne and cradle cap.
i dont know if it was the cream that cleared up his acne - i certinitely wouldnt use it for just acne but perhaps it helped.

DD just developed a bad case of baby acne in the past few days. She is 1 month old.

I use a bit of Aquaphor on her face and wash with Johnson's soap and water (during her bath) and it seems to help. Her face was a lot clearer this morning.

I have had many people swear by this (on here too!) that you take a cloth and put J&J shampoo and wipe the face down. Goes away in 1-3 days.
