In times like these I think that people are trying to comprehend the devestation. Topics like this are only an extension of that need. It in no way means that they are not helping in other ways.

As far as why this gets responses and charity threads don't, I take the info from those treads and utilize it. Action taken, no response is needed.

that's right heidla, well said again!

and i'm still trying to understand how several few get criticized for not 'responding' or 'helping', while someone else makes a comment about how the people who stayed, stayed in order to collect welfare afterwards, isn't? shouldn't that comment be dissected??

your proving my point...why cant you let it go? I was not singling out anyone but those who were just arguing with other people, instead of talking and expressing how they feel...you attacked me, I was not trying to be mean, just point out that a few people were making these threads seem more like the "drama days" , instead of what it should be.....

So cmon and let it go and lets get back to the topic of the hurricane and discuss it and not act like this....

GLADLY....but when you see someone say something sooo disgusting and ignorant....

People are bound to respond to that....

And just because they do or just because they want to discuss a topic doesn't make them drama queens nor should they be lectured about giving to charity.....
ESPECIALLY when they already intend to

no, you responded rudely to my comment, which was how I felt and as important and valid as anyone else's.. I was wondering why??

I stand by the fact that I do not have any reason to come on here and fight or argue, thats not what Im about...so like I just said two or three times. If you feel I was being disrespectful to you, I wasnt or it was not my intention anyhow, and I would like to move past this, but it just keeps going, and I will defend myself if need be, but I do not think "less" of you so dont put those words in my mouth....

Theres a charity called Second Harvest, I believe they take food....

I think everyone should have tried to get out. I think a lot of people wanted to be "taken care of" instead of taking care of themselves (welfare, anyone?). There were evacuation procedures in place -- for everyone. MOST did not leave because they didn't want to. SOme saw their "opportunity" to rob and steal and loot and ..well you see what is happening.

It is a shame and sad and awful and so depressing ... human beings acting this way...what are you going to do with that huge tv you stole?? You don't have a home, electricity, nothing.... so you shoot at people trying to help???

I'm sorry , but what a heartless and ignorant statement. To compare staying in your home to the abuse of wellfare is a comparision I don't understand. I don't think that you can say that most of the people who stayed in their homes did so because they wanted to. Yes, there was limited transportation provided by the city government, but not enough for the entire city. A massive evacuation isn't as easy as they make it seem in the movies.

Yes, it is sad that times like these will bring out the worst in some people. To clump them all into that catagory is rash and IMO wrong.

Well-said Heidla. As many others have expressed in this thread, it is very easy for us to sit up here in our homes, with our air conditioners, computers and all the luxuries that we take for granted that many of these people have never and will never have - and pass judgement on others less fortunate. I wish the negative thoughts and energy so apparent in some of these posts could be turned into something positive, like HELPING these people!Chat Icon

I tend to agree...when I came on to LIF tonight, and the last day or two, Im shocked to see these threads get so many "hits" and responses, but my prayer thread and the donation threads got very little notice or responses...Is it really that we all care so deeply or love us some drama?

Maybe everyone should go spend some time donating a few bucks instead of arguing what could have happened..should have happened...would like to have happened and why it didnt...

Well really I would love to donate but I just dont have the money. Chat Icon Its funny how a lot of the hits and response to these threads are from you

WAIT this was rude? You havent seen many RUDE people then! Should I count how many posts you made on these threads? Im sure there is a way to find out how many hits came from your ip address.

not at all. i was referring to kara's post. about the people who stayed, wanting to "be taken care of", as in, they'll collect welfare afterwards. that to me, was an ignorant, disgusting statement to make.

As a woman said today on the news she stayed because she had lived in New Orleans for 40+ years and she didn't think it would be this bad because it never had been before in all the years that she lived there. Hearing her say that I can understand more why some stayed.

Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...

I heard today people saying they believed in the levies( sp?) because they were told it could withstand it...I think the New orleans government painted two conflicting pictures...telling people there was a mandatory evacuation, but that the levies were safe..they will surely get a ton of flack in the end for the mixed messages...

Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...

Having lived through charlie and seeing what charlie did to Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte it is hard to just pack up your stuff and leave. We had to pack our ferrets up, clothes, food, etc in case of evacuation. We are luckily not near a flood zone, however the canal is not too far and water does rise fast.

To just tell someone ok pack your stuff and leave you feel so helpless. You are suppose to feel safe in your home. If you cant feel safe in your home where can you feel safe.

The days following Charlie were devestating. I know a person who lost her entire house. Her whole house where her, her husband and her 2 daughters filled memories and shared dreams GONE!! She had to evacuate her home and when she returned everything was gone. She told me she was glad she left so she didnt have to witness it happening but upset she left because she knew she was returning to nothing.

When there is a hurricane and you tell someone ok leave you dont know what you are going to be coming back too or even if you are going to be returning.

I think it is more of a connection with the home as to why someone would not want to leave.

Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...

I was having this discussion with a friend last night. While my first thought was "If it were me, I would've packed what I could get into my car quickly and driven off as fast as I could". Then thinking about that, I remembered the line of cars trying to get out of town. Who knows how far away they actually made it to.

As to anyone to stayed on their own - we can only speculate forever. Maybe they were too afraid to loose their memories and possessions. Maybe they thought sometimes forecasters are wrong and it won't be that bad. Maybe they just thought they needed to be in their homes no matter what happened. Maybe they were just scared and did not have the thought process on where to go or what to do.

I can only pray for everyone devastated by this hurricane who have lost loved ones and basically the only lives they have ever known. No jobs to return to, no favorite winter sweater to cuddle up to in the next few months. No comfy chair to curl in at night. No job to return to.

I cannot fathom how anyone going through this is feeling and I just can't criticize since I've never lived through the experience of losing everything I've ever had.

I can understand too. I don't know what I would have done in a situation like that. And as others have pointed out, these are people who are poor, and have next to nothing. I don't know how I would have felt if I had to face leaving behind the little I had. There's more to poverty than simply having no money- there's a psychology involved that many of us may not understand.

I am so sad for these poor people who are suffering down there in New Orleans and Mississippi..

I was just down in New Orleans in May- what a fun exciting place to visit- the food and drinks- wow! i cant fathom not having a bourbon street, the french quarter..just the thought breaks my heart...

It's devastating to see so many people suffering now, whether they decided to leave or not, I dont walk in their shoes and live their live so I cant judge anyone...

michal if you do find a place where we can donate clothes let me know.
