Need to Vent...Neurology or developmental pediatrician

So I was told to try and get a diagnosis on my daughter by her school (DDI) so it could help her with the kindergarten process.
I have called Cohens for Neurology, they told me they don't take my insurance. Which is weird because usually everyone takes The Empire Plan NYSHIP.
Anyway, I have never done this before, I dont know what i am actually asking for when I call, so I feel stupid when they ask why I am calling. Some people have been so mean on the phone. Would it be an evaluation to see what she has? Anyway I havent found anyone that takes my insurance and its getting frustrating. The one that did, asked what are you being evaluated for? Now I dont know what my daughter has..maybe add?? Sensory seeking?? Aspergers, Autism..i dont know! I have no idea. But the one dr. that takes my insurance doesnt diagnose for ADD anymore so that one is out. I just sat here at work crying for a good 15 minutes. I want my daughter to get a diagnosis, and I can not find a dr.office for either Neurology or develepmental. Can anyone help me? I dont know who else to call? Should I call my DD regular pediatrician to ask them for reccomendations. Didnt realize how stressful this could be.Chat Icon

Call your pediatrician and ask them for recommendations. That is what I did and they gave me a couple of names. Then I checked my insurance website to see if they took my insurance. I don't recall them asking me what I wanted DS being evaluated for. I am sure you could just say "ASD/ADD or other possible issues"

We just started using Dr. Tina Narayan at N. Shore. She's dual board certified in neuro and behaviorial specialist. Her number is 802-6100. We loved her! She takes her time with you, talks to you in lamen terms. Empire plan is one of the best plans but I would try. The only bad part is the wait time for an appointment. We had originally went to Dr. Grossman in New Hyde Park, but wasnt thrilled with his office staff and he doesnt have any bedside matter.

I am not familiar with DDI but does your daughter get services? Has she been evaluated by the school special ed dept? Did they suggest what they think she has? Has she ever seen a neuro up until this point?

Yes my dd get services,She gets OT, PT, and speech. The school believes she has ADD but they can not diagnose her only give an idea. It is actually the sachem schools asking if she has a diagnosis. I guess it helps them to get the services they need. She def has a very short attention span. She would not do well in a typical kindergaten class of up to possibly 28 kids. The school feels she would do better in a class of 15 with one aide. So in order to make sure she gets the best option its better to have my daughter evaluated to see if she has Add or Adhd. She is also a very sensory seeking child so we have other issues with that too.
I finally got an appointment yesterday with a Neuro named Mary Andriola. I now am going to try today to get an appoint with a developmetal pediatrician. The main goal is to make sure my dd doesnt fall behind in a typical class and need constant reminders. With a smaller calss that would be best for her. Thank you everyone for all the info. I will keep you updated on what happens. Her appointment isnt until February 24th, and her CSE meeting will most likely be in March so Im hoping we have our answers by then.
