Need some reassurance from daycare/school moms

I just need a little pick-me-up.

Most of you know i've been a SAHM to Johnny for 2 years. I guess that title is gone now, he started 2 year old preschool program yesterday. It was a great day...

However this morning was rough. As I was leaving, a little boy ripped a truck out of his hands. It sent johnny into hysterics. He then was walking towards me crying with his arms up to me going "up up up up". I had to tell him "Mom has to go, I love you!".

I was brave...they assured me he would be fine and I KNOW he is.

But how long do you think it typically takes kids to adjust to school or daycare? I can't help that I have a huge knot in my stomach right now. I am sure he stopped crying at some point, but it made me quite sad.

I feel for you so much!!! I will be in your position in a few months and just pictured Matteo saying it, b/c he'd do the same thing if that happened.

And good for you for handling it so well, that I'm SURE helped him to see you brave and made it easier for him.

(ps--can you remind me of this when I'm posting something similar in January??Chat Icon )

DD would cry and hang on to me yelling MOMMY for about 2 weeks I think? It was horrible but I would call or they would call me a little while after I left and tell me she stopped crying right after I walked out the door!

It didn't take long for her to literally run into the classroom and not even say goodbye to me!

Hang in there!Chat Icon

Ben has been in daycare since he was 13 weeks old so our experience with him adjusting has been different. For the first few months, he was perfectly fine and it was me who had problems leaving him. Once he reached about 9 mos and started having some separation anxiety, he would cry a little when DH or I would drop him off but be okay within a few minutes of our leaving (we were told). He still has days when he wants us to stay with him, mostly after long weekends or when he's been out of school due to vacation time or being sick. He's always fine within a day or so. Honestly it depends on the kid and how comfortable they are there.

Last year Sarah started nursery school. First day she didn't cry (I did though). Second day she was hysterical when I dropped her off. The school called me after about 15 minutes to say she'd calmed down. That was really it for her, although they told me sometimes during the day she'd get a little teary. She loved her teacher and still talks about her "best friend Miss Gail" all the time.

This summer she went to camp at her school. She was not comfortable with her counselor and cried every day. Sometimes they said it was less than 10 minutes, sometimes it was half the day.

I had the same fears when we moved Lucas from one daycare to another...the adjustment was more stressful for me though. He had some really rough mornings but it took only 2 1/2 weeks...now he walks in like he's the mayor. Chat Icon

Kids are amazing at adjusting...and since I believe Johnny to be amazing in general...I know he'll be okay.

Re: Need some reassurance from daycare/school moms

My DD has been in daycare since she was 12 weeks old (she's now 3 1/2)

To this day every once in a while Taylor will get in a mood and not want me to leave... and she'll cry and tell me not to go etc. and hold on to my leg... It's hard, but you just tell them you love them and you'll see them in a little while...and then they get over it.
