Bakeries keep pastries on trays for a few days without boxes. They are not baked fresh every day. Cannoli is usually filled fresh. At least it was when I worked at a bakery for 5 years. Some pastries should not be kept in the fridge (sfogliatelle).

Put a paper towel in the box. It depends on what pastries you got.

Yes but the prob is by the time you buy them from the bakery they may already be a few days old...

Keeping it 12 more hours isn’t going to make much difference. The paper towel will help with moisture to slow it down.

thanks i ended up putting them in pyrex because i'm also just paranoid in general about bugs. they seemed slightly stale but perfectly edible and i warmed them in a toaster for a bit which helped.
i like the paper towel idea. I wonder if it would have helped in the pyrex
