My house was broken into and I want to share some important info....
I had a rough Friday...... I got a call first thing in the morning that a very close family friend had passed due to Lung Cancer which was very upsetting to begin with and then... I went to take my son to school and was only gone for only 2 hrs in the middle of the day and when I came home and was about to walk in the house with my daughter I noticed my basement door was kicked in... I immediately put my daughter back in the car and called the police and my DH.... someone had broken in, gone through my kids drawers and closets, all my DH's and my drawers and stolen our lockbox with all our important papers (savings bonds, birth cert., passports, soc. sec. cards, deed to the house, etc) and my jewelry box with all my jewelry including a family heirloom... it's a HORRIBLE feeling to have someone violate your house like that!! and the scary thing is that you cannot live in a much safer neighborhood than we live in!!!
Unfortunately, it's taken something like this to realize a few things......
-DO NOT leave your lock-box in an obvious place, like under the bed or in a dresser drawer... instead put it in a box in basement and label it something weird like 'Old Photos' or 'Spare fan parts'
-Take pictures of ALL your jewelry and keep receipts and a list of EVERYTHING in your jewelry box, for insurance purposes and so that police have a record of what was stolen and then can tell Pawn Shops and other stores what exactly the jewelry looks like. There are things that I know that I have forgotten are in my jewelry box, things I don't wear all the time. AND keep your jewelry in a safe!
-Keep copies of birth cert., passports, deeds to the house and a list of ALL the serial numbers from your Savings Bonds and keep them at your parents house or somewhere else so that you have that info in case it is stolen... Thankfully I kept all the serial numbers of my kids Savings Bonds in the
Savings Bond Wizard It has made it much easier to report them stolen knowing all the info I have.
We are just thankful that no one was hurt and we are still hoping that maybe the police were able to get some fingerprints or something and are able to find who did this. For the time being I am just trying to feel comfortable and safe in my own home and I will be setting our alarm whenever I leave, even if during the daytime.

Ohhh Jenn that totally SUX....I am so sorry, I cannot imagine how violated you feel.
Thank you for the tips, it is very kind of you to send out a warning while in the midst of such a mess.
I hope they find the &**(&^*****$^!%* and soon!!

I'm sorry you and your family was violated in that way. Just glad no one was home.
I am so paranoid about stuff like, I turn on the alarm even if we are going around the block for a walk. We always turn it on before going to bed and I also do it when I am home alone sometimes.

UGh! I feel for you. We were robbed in March and they took my checkbook and some credit cards, a camera and some other incidentals. It is a horrible feeling. We were robbed by the neighbors kid so we are in the process of getting some of the stuff back but it is an uncomfortable feeling.
I hope they find who did it and you can recover some goods.

How Scary! I'm so sorry you had to go through this. Thank God your daughter is so perceptive and that you didn't go into the house while they were in there!  Thanks for the tips.

OMG Jenn, I am so sorry this happened to you.
I've had my car stolen (2x) and my wallet, and I know the skeevy feeling I had then.... but that *cannot* compare to having your own home and private space invaded. Plus the fact that they must have known you would go out.
Thanks for the tips and I hope they catch the lowlives!

I am so sorry to hear this but I am glad no one was hurt. Thanks for all of the tips and I hope the police recover some of your possesions and get the creeps that did this.

Wow Jenn I am so sorry about your friend and your house. I can only imagine the feeling of violation you guys have. I hope they catch the SOB or SOBS!
