The two junior Marines joined the Corps last summer. They met at communications school in Twentynine Palms, Calif., and married just a few months later.
Now — following a few rocky months of matrimony, living in a small apartment in southern California — the pair is missing. Some family members fear the worst for 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Margaret “Maggie” McMahon.
“The whole family suspects foul play,” said Randy Zlobec, McMahon’s cousin, who grew up with her in the Hamptons area of eastern Long Island, N.Y. “We just want to know what’s happened and if she’s OK.
”
Marine officials placed McMahon and her husband, Pfc. George “Kevyn” Reid II, 22, on unauthorized absence status April 1 after they failed to report to duty, Marine officials said in a written statement April. 4.
When reached by telephone Friday, Reid’s mother, Margaret Westervelt of High Point, N.C., said, “We haven’t heard anything” and declined to discuss the situation further.
Both Marines joined the Corps about 10 months ago and work as communication equipment operators. McMahon is assigned to Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Reid is stationed at nearby Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
The Corps has contacted both Marines’ families and the Escondido police. A search of the couple’s home in the north San Diego suburb showed no sign of the couple, Zlobec said.
The McMahon family has tried calling Maggie’s cell phone, checking her MySpace page and tracking her bank accounts. The only sign of activity was her bank records, which show an attempted withdrawal of $400 in Hazelwood, Mo. Her family believes Reid has grandparents in Missouri, said Heather McMahon, McMahon’s sister.
Family members said McMahon called her mother March 30 and told her Reid was jealous of the attention she received from other men, and became angry after learning she was going out of town for training, Heather McMahon said.
A few hours before dawn March 31, McMahon called a friend in New York and cried hysterically before the line abruptly went dead, Heather McMahon said.
She added that their family never approved of her sister’s marriage to Reid, whom they felt was verbally abusive.
“I don’t know if it ever got physical. She probably wouldn’t tell us because she knows that we we’d all jump on a plane and kill him if he put his hands on her,” Heather McMahon said. “Our biggest concern is we don’t want another incident like what happened in North Carolina.
”
She was referring to Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, a 20-year-old pregnant Marine who was found dead near Camp Lejeune, N.C., on Jan. 11. Authorities say a Marine who Lauterbach accused of rape and planned to testify against, Cpl. Cesar Laurean, killed her.
Laurean disappeared Jan. 11 and probably fled to Mexico, authorities said. Lauterbach was placed on unauthorized absence status in December, but nobody aggressively investigated her disappearance until several weeks later.
The Lauterbach family has criticized Marine officials in North Carolina for failing to respond more quickly to her disappearance. Marine officials in southern California have been in frequent contact with the McMahon family.
“The Marines were very responsive,” Zlobec said.
The McMahon family has a long history with the Marine Corps. McMahon is one of 11 children. Her brother is a Marine and many of her siblings served time in the enlisted ranks.
“With the exception of the black sheep of the family, who decided to join the Air National Guard, we pretty much all joined the Corps,” said Heather McMahon, who spent nearly four years on active duty before separating in 2000.
McMahon attended Elmira College in New York for one year and left for financial reasons. She hoped to go back to school and become a history teacher, her sister said.
Family members described McMahon as a small-town girl who was kind-hearted and sometimes bubbly, but not particularly savvy about people.
“She’s a very, very good-looking girl and she doesn’t know what she has. She’s very naive,” Zlobec said.
Neither of the missing Marines has been to Iraq, but both expected to go later this year.
During the week following their disappearance, Reid routinely logged on to his MySpace page, where he lists his hometown as Lafayette, La., but says most of his friends and family are in North Carolina. He smokes but does not drink, according to the Web page.
Also on the page, Reid wrote, “I am going to Iraq this summer. I hope this will help me get a better job.
”
By April 4, the page overflowed with urgent messages from family and friends.
A message from Reid’s master sergeant read: “Devil Dog, You’ve completed two military boot camps in your life and still have not learned any honor or any courage as of yet. You did not give me the courtesy to allow to help you out or to at least discuss your problems, whatever it may be.
“You did not even allow anyone else that chance to help you. By you leaving, you have embarrassed me in front of the command. You couldn’t even be a grown man to tell me to my face that you were going to go UA. I would have at least respected that. ... [T]here will be a ‘manhunt’ for you, and eventually you will be found.

OK... As promised we will be updating everyone on what's happening... Well, It seems for some reason the Escondido Police are trying to tell the media that it looks like Maggy and Kevyn staged this and are on the run.. Well to let you all know, the family thinks this is the biggest CROCK heard yet.. The reason is because they say that the House is completely empty and the only thing left was Maggy's material she would sew with.. Well, the Naval Investigators are still treating it as an abduction and we believe them! First we were notified that the Apartment was untouched, all of their belongings were there even Maggy's License.. So, you mean to tell us that she has been reported missing and no one was watching the house and they somehow snuck back and cleaned the place out??? We don't thinks so!!! It seems awful funny how Maggy's step Mom is there in California and they WILL NOT let her enter the home at all.... WHY??? What is being Hidden???? Anyway, stay tuned for more information soon..... Seems that the Escondido police know something that we all don't and that's just NOT FAIR!!!! If you are not hiding anything, let her step MOM IN THE HOUSE!!!!

Thinking about this blog entry... they probably won't let the step-mom in the house because it's still a potential crime scene. They may be leaning towards the theory that they both left voluntarily, but an abduction obviously hasn't been ruled out entirely, so they can't just be letting people in and out of there. And it's a private residence and she's not next of kin, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it too.
The details not matching up with what is/isn't in the apartment is strange, but there've been so many conflicting details reported already, even in the news stories... I doubt the Escondido police officers are in the business of hiding evidence and spinning the story to the media. Their current conclusion may be all they can do with the facts they have. I'm glad the NCIS is still treating it as an abduction though, because I do think it needs to be looked into further. And because of what sadly happened to Maria Lauterbach a few months ago, I'm sure they're going to be very careful to do everything they can to help.

I keep logging on to see if there has been any news. I hope that whatever has happened, she is safe, and if he hasn't done anything wrong, then I hope he is safe, too. If he has done something to her, then I hope that he gets what he deserves. I am thinking that it may not take very long for law enforcement to get a court order for the information they want from myspace.
I am considering discontinuing all use of myspace if they do not cooperate!!!!!

Body: The Escondido PD is backing off of the investigation for Maggie and Kevyn. They believe that they may have both left voluntairly but we are still unsure weather Maggie is safe or still going along willingly because as anyone who knows Maggie knows she cannot be out of touch with any of us for more then a day. She would explode. Also I want to clairify that we DO NOT believe that she left to avoid going to Iraq. That is not her character. She would not run from that given that two of her brothers have gone. Please keep reposting the bullitens until we hear from her. At this point it's all we can hope for. Thank you all for your concern.

Not sure why they are missing, but I know you can delete your own comments from someones myspace. Maybe they got advice to delete them? I'll let you know what I find out!
