Moms who exclusively pump (or pumped), please help!

I've been doing this for my DD for 2.5 weeks now and I'm in ALOT of pain!!! It's not engorgement or clogged duct pain (I had that last week, which resolved). This is like friction burns on my areolas. I've tried putting lanolin on before I pump, I've tried using olive oil before I pump, I've tried using different sized breast shields, but nothing is helping. I can't even hold my DD close to me because the slightest bit of touching is excrutiating. I don't remember it being like this with DD#1. I'm so ready to give up, but I feel like I will be depriving my baby of what is best for her.

Please, if you have any advice or words of wisdom, please share. Between the lack of sleep and this pain, I'm about to lose my mind!

What setting are you using the pump on?

I use it on the lower suction levels. The higher settings don't mean more milk, in fact, for me, it's the opposite.

Does it hurt just when you pump?? or al the time?
Do you have shooting pains, or does just the nipple hurt? Are your nipples really red?

You could be getting thrush, even though the baby may not be exhibiting symptoms or a bacterial infection in teh nipples.

I would call your LC or OB

It hurts pretty much all the time, but is especially bad when I pump. I don't really have shooting pain; it's pretty much just the nipple that hurts, although I do have pain underneath the left breast. Yes, my nipples are really red. Does this sound like thrush? There aren't any white spots.

It sounds like the nipples are damaged.... Your nipples probably got damaged from not using lubrication and a smaller horn.... it only takes 1 X to cause microscopic cuts in the nipples and breast tissue.....

Keep using the olive oil and larger horns. I would also call your LC or OB because it could turn into a bacterial infection.... it doesn't sound like thrush YET but keep an eye out for it. They can prescribe mucipricon which really helps

I had the same thing happen... It sucks, I know!Chat Icon

Thank you so much. I actually have larger horns. I just thought they were pulling my nipple too far into it, causing more pain. I'm going to go back to them and see if that helps.
