Migraines before AF- how to deal? What to take?

I had never had a migraine before this year. Now I realize they are coming every 28 days and staying for 2 full days. I can't deal with them anymore. I have even taken 600mg of Ibuprofin and it only takes a slight edge off.

What is good for a migraine? Does it matter that it appears to be a hormonal migraine?

TIA for any input!

Before I found out I was allergic to Aspirin, was taking Excedrin Migraine. It's a combo of Aspirin and Caffine. It worked well for me.

But now since I can't take it, only thing that helped for me is doctor prescribed meds. Tylenol does nothing for me for migraine.

Re: Migraines before AF- how to deal? What to take?

OMG, I just started getting menstral migraines in the last two years. At first I thought it was stress, but then I realized I got my period soon after the migraine. I found that if I don't take asprin or advil right at the first sign of one, nothing will help, and I have to live two days misrable. While the asprin and advil don't get rid of the migraine completely, I am still able to function. I just try to sleep it out when I come home from work and alternate asprin and advil every few hours.

I have tried lots of prescription meds for my migraines. I actually have found excedrin and advil migraine to both work better.

I get them before AF as well. I tried Advil Liqui-Gels 200 mg ( I take 2) and it worked really fast! Within 20 minutes I could already see a big difference!

Excedrin migrane works okay for me - I used to take bubital for them - (I would only get one the day before) - but I don't like taking that with the girls b.c it makes me drowsy.

I have a bad one today and it isn't fun - I'm going to look into some other options - but do you get any warnings? I get lightening bolts in my vision - I learned if I take something the second I see them it makes a big difference versus if I wait a bit then take the meds.

I take Maxalt and it is the best. It is not cheap but I would pay anything for something that works so I didnt mind the added cost.

Re: Migraines before AF- how to deal? What to take?

I used to be a frequent migraine sufferer but then (knock on wood) they sort of just stopped.

I was getting them ALL THE TIME.

My problem was figuring out what was triggering them but yours seem like menstural migraines.

What I would do when I could tell one was starting was pop some excedrin and drink something with lots of caffeine. Mountain dew or coffee.

Then get an ice pack PRONTO and put it on my eyes.

But it really helped MOSTLY if I got this going ASAP at the beginning.

Also be advised to check the dosage lists and compare the boxes of excedrin, extra strength excedrin and excedrin migraine.

I think the last time I bought a bottle I got a huge bottle of the target brand 'compare to' excedrin extra strength -- and that as well as the actual exccedrin extra strength had the same dosage as excedrin migraine.

the excedrin migraine was just extra $$$

I would see your Dr. I have had migraines since I was 5 and your best bet is a prescription. If you want to go OTC, I would try Excedrine Migraine, a gatorade and an ice pack.

Re: Migraines before AF- how to deal? What to take?

I usually take 3 motrin which is equal to a prescription I got from a dr. for Migraines once I forget the name but it usually helps if I take it right when I feel it coming on..
