Re: Michael Moore's 'Sicko'

I'm bumping my own post because I did see this movie and it was the most thought provoking film I've seen in a while. Among other points, the movie highlighted the fact that Americans WITH insurance are being denied coverage when these for-profit companies decide that our health is too expensive.

It hit close to home for my family. We are all employed and thought we had "good" health insurance.

This winter, my dad was literally kicked out of a hospital. United Health Care (not the doctors) told the facility he was well enough to leave. They called my mom at work and told her to get him by noon. A week later my parents received a bill in the mail for $10,681. United Health initially told my parents that he was 100% covered. Instead of taking care of my dad, my mom and I were forced to make written appeals and a total of 27 phone calls.

Sicko is playing right in Stony Brook and at the Island 16 off the LIE.

I recommend that you see it... because (IMO) the US health care system is embarrassing when compared to other industrialized countries.

Its not just my problem, or my dads... it's yours too.

i cant stand him or his "values" and I will never see one of his movies.

Also, I never want to live in a country where there is socialized medicine. If you think healthcare sucks now....go live in a country where you do not have a choice of what doctor to see. Chat Icon

How do you know you don't like him if you never saw one of his moviesChat Icon

As he points out in the movie... we have a lot of amazing "socialized" agencies. Schools, Libraries, Fire, Post, Police....

ETA.... depending on your HMO you may not be able to choose your Dr., your lab or your hospital. Lots of Americans with health plans don't have choices...

I haven't seen the film yet (can't wait to though) but isn't it really about Americans who DO have health care coverage and how crappy it is? Not even people who DON'T have it??

I know someone who had to go to the hospital in Amsterdam, she found the care to be INCREDIBLE and just had to pay a fee when she left. Sounds better than here to me. My cousin has cancer on her eyelid and when she went for her first treatment they asked for her payment upfront b/c it was cosmetic. Cancer is cosmetic? She has insurance, btw. Makes me physically ILL.

Re: Michael Moore's 'Sicko'

Michael Moore is a genius...... he gets all of you people fighting and talking about his movies, which promote socialism, and then you all go see is film and he makes a fortune.
He is living the American (capitalist) dream. Everything that is said in his films can be debated. I had my Hip, my ACL and PCL replaced 2 years ago, I kept on top of the medical billing departments for the hospital and paid a total out of pock, including doctor visit co-pays, of 600.00 for 120,000.00 worth of hospital stays, doctor visits and surgeries. There is nothing wrong with our system; the hospital billing system is crap.

Re: Michael Moore's 'Sicko'

i haven't seen the movie but I want to. The health insurance companies do make medical decisions for us. Our doctors have their hands tied sometimes. My brother's rehab could be cut short when they determine he is ready to go home. He has not been fitted for a prothesis yet and cannot remember what he did an hr ago or if were were visiting that day. He needs much more therapy and it's one of the things that keeps me up at night. Luckily so far, insurance has been ok, but every day I wonder if they will kick him out and then what do we do?

His doctors have all agreed that the insurance companies dictate our health. They don't listen to the docs. In fact, the people who make the decisions are not even doctors but clerks and business people who have limited medical backgrounds. I was appalled after hearing this. The therapist have to carefully document in the charts to make it look a certain way so the insurance company will grant more time. It's a game..it's crap and I hate it.

Re: Michael Moore's 'Sicko'

Socialized medicine sounds really good. But - no one thinks abotu the fact that bc it is set up that way they make calls on who is "well" or "young" enough to treat or provide certain services/procedures. I personally don't think Americans will ever be in a place where it is okay for their parent to not get a procedure that could extend their life for years - bc they are "too" old.

I am not saying our system is perfect... but I just don't think socialized medicine is the way to go.

Re: Michael Moore's 'Sicko'

I cannot stand Michael Moore. He's an opportunist and a sensationalist, much like Al Sharpton, in my opinion.

One of the biggest problems with our healthcare system extends from our legal system...the fact that we SUE left and right.

malpractice insurance and liability ins for doctors and hosptials is literally through the roof.

you'd be surprised how many people in countries with "socialized" healthcare come here for treatment (Cananda is a big one)

Holland and it's population cannot be compared wit the US and it's population.

If you want socialized medicine, you are also asking for higher taxes. which will be according to your pay, like all taxes are. and then, it'll be just like Medicaid and Medicare. and you will be treated like everyone else. Yes, even you, with your fancy car and nice house, will be treated like the crack whore from the corner.

it'd be interesting to see how long that particular social program was popular.

Re: Michael Moore's 'Sicko'

I have seen most of his movies, and what bothers me about Michael Moore is that he does exactly what he accuses everyone else of doing - he LIES!

He stages MANY parts of his "documentaries" -- and outright makes portions of them up. Often he discusses certain regulations and laws and he's wrong. I was a fan until I realized how much he stages and just plain makes up.

I'd love to think that most people who see his movies do their own research to separate the real facts from the "MM" version of the facts. Sadly, many don't.

If it makes you think and do your own research, that's great. If you take what he says as the truth, then it's not a good thing.

I don't plan to waste my time or money on any more of his films.

I'm not disputing there are problems with the health care system in the US... However, I'd advise people not to use Michael Moore's films as research. I'd rather look for facts, not what is spewed out of the mind of someone who sensationalizes everything and does things mostly for attention.

And don't get me started on socialized medicine. There are far bigger problems with it than just not having control over what doctor to see. Chat Icon I don't have the answer to our health care problems, but I certainly don't think socialized medicine is the answer.

Yea I agree with you on that I don't use his films as research... This is a topic that I have actually studied for quite some time... I know he sensationalizes topics but I believe the service he provides is that he gets people talking about serious issues.

I think widely publicizing inaccurate information does more of a disservice than any good. JMHO.

I know people like him and he's free to make his movies and say whatever he wants. (I'm big on free speech) I just hope people would go to more sources than just MM if they're really interested. That's all.

SICKO Fact Check

Other than leaving out some of the good aspects of our current system, this article says that there are few inaccuracies in the film.
