medicines while breastfeeding q
this is an in advance question.
when you breastfed did your ped give you a list of stuff not to take?
i called today and i asked about a couple medications...but i have so many more questions.
for example lets say you are breastfeeding and use sudafed...or you have a panic attack and need a xanax....or take an antacid? or even advil?
do the nurses at the hospital give you a big old yes or no list...or do you have to call your pediatrician each time you want to take a medicine?
tia!

While BFing I never took medicine without first checking with both my children's ped and my obgyn. I would also ask the pharmacist as well.

I used kellymom.com as a resource for OTC meds. I ended up not taking anything for a cold while BFing because I was nervous about it affecting my supply. If I ever needed to take anything else, I'd let the doctor know I was BFing and asked both the doctor and pharmacist if it was safe to take.

Re: medicines while breastfeeding q
no one will give you a list. you have to ask your dr or google about each one. you can mostly assume that if you are getting prescribed stuff on discharge from the hospital that it's safe for BF since generally your OB would be the one to discharge you.
as far as anti-anxiety and anti-depressants, it depends on the med but most cannot be taken while breastfeding. i had PPD and they wanted me to take zoloft but i refused because reports on it are iffy and breastfeeding was important to me. im fairly certain xanax is a big no because it has clearly been shown to be transmitted out through the breast milk.
most meds that cannot be taken during pregnancy cannot be taken while BF.

Lactmed is the best site, since some peds and ob aren't we versed in breastfeeding

Re: medicines while breastfeeding q
The only meds I have taken so far were the ones they gave me after my c-section...motrin, oxycodon and then I had a horrible reaction to the spinal, which a resident doctor administered and he missed the first two times, so I had it 3 times, it made me so itchy that I wanted to die so they gave me benedryl. All were approved while breastfeeding but I tried to get off of them as soon as I could.
With my first son I was on motrin and the oxy also since I had a c-section with him also but I also had mastitis with him so I was on Keflex, a breastfeeding approved antibiotic.

Same.
Just an FYI to the OP- Sudafed is NOT a good idea while BFing, it'll dry out your supply. Antacids and Advil/Motrin are fine. Not sure about Xanax.
