Maternity leave - crazy question

So here's an offbeat, possibly even unethical question...

Anyone have any ideas on how to "beat the system" and "extend" their maternity leave a few weeks?

Re: Maternity leave - crazy question

at my first job women who commuted from LI to NYC used to have there doctors put them on "bed rest" 3 weeks before the baby was due

so they got disabilty for 3 weeks- then maternity leave once the baby was born

This sounds right! JUst get a note from your doctor. That should work!

Re: Maternity leave - crazy question

If you're subject to FMLA, your job is only protected for a total of 12 weeks. Those 12 weeks can be taken either before (if there are complications) and/or after the baby is born. If you go on leave for a few weeks before you give birth, your employer can require you to return to work earlier than you'd like.

Does your employer require you to use your accrued sick/vacation time when you're out on FMLA? If not, you could take 12 weeks of unpaid FMLA leave and then take the additional sick/vacation/personal time that you've accrued.
