Anyone know where I can get this done cheaply?? I have my BA and MS in Education and have 4 credits leftover from that (I think), so I only need 26 credits to go up in the pay scale chart... I heard that CLEP exams are good, and some are worth like 6 credits... Anyone else know of some cheap ways to get credits that are not like actual college courses? lol

okay- which tests did you find were the easiest to take? I signed up for the college mathematics test because it's 6 credits and my degree is math, so I read I am allowed to take that one because of that... I'm reading that spanish is a good one, and can be worth up to 12 credits too. I haven't taken spanish since HS though

I took a few kdsi courses online
They were 250 each and each class was 3 credits

They weren't bad.

I tried taking a Clep in French since I took it from middle school through high school and one semester at collee but being that I took it in college they wouldn't let me do the clep

yeah apparently the rule is that you can take a CLEP test that was your major, but cannot take a CLEP test that was another class you took in college outside of your major area... makes no sense lol

I took italian in college though, so I may sign up for the spanish one

There's a Clep called analysis & interpret of lit. You basically read passages and answer questions based on what you read. Kind of like the verbal on the sat. That Clep is worth 6 credits. That would be a good one if you are allowed to take it.

Re: MA+30? NYCDOE

I did it through FEMA. It was an independent study program and cost $79 a credit. It was super easy and quick. Many of the teachers in my school did it.

Can you give me more info? Like FEMA...Federal Emergency Management? I think I googled right but I am not sure! Thank you!

FEMA: For salary differentials, FEMA credits can be submitted as long as they were earned at Frederick Community College. The DOE no longer accepts FEMA credits for salary differentials from Thomas Edison College. When submitting supporting documentation for your salary differential, you must submit an original transcript from Frederick Community College that includes both the date and the credits earned. Note that Frederick Community College lists the FEMA course in the semester it is received, not the date that you took or paid for the course. The DOE grants differentials based on the semester that is listed on the transcript, not when you actually took the course. When you transfer FEMA credits to Frederick Community College, please check their semester schedule to avoid confusion.

Not sure why it seems weird. It works and it is cheap.

Go to FEMA. GOV and search for their independent study program.

Like the pp said you have to transfer the credits through Frederick's University. It took me about 2 months to do 30 credits.

I had no issue submitting it to the DOE and it was a very nice raise.

I had a MA +12 when I graduated. I did did KDSI online to get my rest. At that time it was $199 of a 3 credit class. You just need to watch videos and answer questions.

I am NYC teacher trying to complete the 30 plus. Could someone help put my mind at ease that I'm not wasting my time and money doing these FEMA classes. My plan is to submit them for credit through Frederick CC. Has anyone done this or does the NYC DOE not allow this for teachers. The web site and HR connect both confirmed that the credits would be accepted but, I'd like to hear from a fellow NYC teacher before I use 2,400 dollars for credits. PLEASE HELP!

Yes, it is totally legit. The only "catch" is that only NYC will accept these credits towards your plus 30. So if you ever got a job elsewhere you wouldn't be on the MA plus 30 scale.

That's just fine. I'm not going anywhere. I was just worried about wasting my money because none of my fellow teachers even knew what I was talking about. I'm almost done with all 30 courses and then I guess I buy them through Frederick CC online.
Does the college send the transcript directly t the DOE?

the college will send the transcript to you, then you send it to the DOE. The DOE has accepted my transcripts and are reviewing them now. i will update when I find out if it is approved!

Yes, they give you an option to select 2 locations to send them to. I sent 1 copy to Court St. and 1 to myself. When I called the other day to see if the DOE received them the man told me he can't give such information over the phone and I would have to come in person to find out Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

So now I'm going to take a trip down there this week and complete the differential process in person. It's annoying but at least I know it will get done.

I had them send to me, and then I sent to DOE via certified mail so i knew I would get a receipt when they received it. It will take them close to 8 weeks before they even process it, so just keep that in mind!

Even though I'm going to wait until I'm tenured to do my +30, how easy and long does it take to do these FEMA credits?

I'm already high on the step scale for getting credited years I worked elsewhere. I don't want my principal to think I'm too expensive when it comes time for tenure decisions. You just ever know.

I have a question about FEMA...when looking through the independent study, so they have anything other than emergency management? Am I looking in the wrong place? I only need 12 credits, but would like to do this from home as I have two little ones.

Anyone have a list of which CLEP exams the DOE accepts? Or should I call HR connect.
