Re: Living near a gas station

I have never heard of this before but it sounds logical. Is living near a gas station unsafe because it is transient, explosive or something else?

Re: Living near a gas station

There is a gas station 2.1 miles from my house, at the turn from the main road into my neighborhood. I'm comfortable with that. I know people that have gas stations at the end of their block, I wouldn't be comfortable with that.
Gas stations are notorious for underground pollution issues that have been linked to health problems.

We looked at a house in Blue Point that would have been a great starter home for us with lots of property to build on, low price, low taxes, move in condition.

It was next door to a gas station. We decided to cross it off the list. Underground pollution was our concern.

I also "think" that if there is a leak & it makes it way to your property, that it is "your" repsonsibility to get it cleaned up Chat Icon

Re: Living near a gas station

I wouldn't be concerned of a hazard- I wouldn't want to live next to a gas station because of the noise/lights. Environmental standards have changed and gas stations had to upgrade their storage tanks- by NYS law. I finance a couple of mortgages on gas stations, and banks won't give $$ to someone to buy a gas station unless the property is totally clean

You would not be responsible to clean up pollution on your property if the gas station is the one doing the polluting.

That being said, I wouldn't chance it either. Gas stations can have all kinds of problems and I would rather not deal with it. And there is extra noise/traffic associated with having a gas station that close to your house.

Not to mention resale value. Judging just by these few responses, you're alienating a portion of potential buyers when it's time to sell.

As others have said, the underground pollution. A close relative lived 5 blocks away from a gas station, there was underground "pollution" and there is all kinds of crap going on in their neighborhood. Don't do it!

I wouldn't want to be near one as in end of my block, but for explosion purposes really. I'm so paranoid! Plus, gas stations get robbed and I wouldn't want to give access to a robber.
