Lets talk bottles again, moms of 1 year olds...

Emily is 16 months, and still takes 2 bottles a day, in the morning and before bed. At 1 year the doctor told us to get rid of the bottles and pacies, and the pacies were gone instantly, it only took 24 hours, but I've had a hard time going "cold turkey" with the bottles.

She just doesn't drink milk well from a sippy cup. Straw cups are better then others, but at that she still only drinks half if we are lucky. I'm just afraid that if we get rid of the bottles, she won't have enough milk. I know people say she will realize that if she's hungry and wants the milk she has to drink it from the cup, but we tried 24 hrs without any bottles yesterday and she just wanted nothing to do wiht the cups.

I just don't know if I should just keep trying, just go cold turkey again today, or if maybe she's not ready? Chat Icon I know now is better then ever --- because as she gets older it'll get harder and harder, I just don't know what to do.

It doesn't help that both my mom and husband think she's not ready to get rid of the bottles.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would think it depends on your doctor. Mine told me not to worry if she wont drink milk that she is getting enough calcium from other things but I know some drs want the babies to have a certain amount of milk.

I'm the SAME way Melissa!! I am so afraid she isn't getting the right amount of milk and for me, it's a major concern since I am not a milk drinker.

Maybe take her to pick out a Special character sippy cup JUST for milk? Maybe that would motivate her to drink from it?

Either that, or give her less milk, but have that sippy available all the time. I don't bother giving it to her until after breakfast now...she won't touch it. We took ours out with us to the store yesterday and she drank quite a bit....not as much as a 7 oz bottle, but a good half of the tall Nuby cup.

I have till about 18 months (so my Dr says) and honestly, she'll drink from it when she wants to. She spent the night with friends a few weeks ago and used the sippy ALL Day for her milk.

And to be honest....I personally am not ready to give up the bottle....I love when she cuddles up with me in our bed during "down time" with it. BUT....I also know she is ready for the cup because she now PLAYS with the bottle....holding it over her head and letting the milk drip on her face.....apparently that is funny

Re: Lets talk bottles again, moms of 1 year olds...

maybe focus on taking away just one bottle at a time-like, give her the sippy w/bkfst & just leave it out so she can grab it if/when she wants it,and then give her bottle just at night-or perhaps the other way around.
Eventually she'll realize that she better take it (the sippy) when she has the chance, bc the bottle wont be until the day's over!
I am still trying to find a way to do this w/my 2+ yo, I did away w/the morning & afternoon bottle-but the night one I'm having a real hard time with.

Our doc is pretty much the same. She gets milk in her cereal and calcium in her yogurts. She really doesn't like milk. She takes maybe 1 sippy cup a day. We don't stress about it. She drinks plenty of water so she's well hydrated. She's also only about 18 pounds at 17 months and he still doesn't stress about it. I do have to say we never made the milk transition in the bottle though so it wasn't like she went from drinking a lot of milk to drinking less.

It's probably something you have to discuss with your ped. to see what they want you to do.

Antonio still takes 3 bottles a day as Monkeybride suggested I will prob over this break give him the afternoon milk in a sippy.

I am going to let him watch me pour it into the sippy so he know it is not water....as you see I have planned this outChat Icon

Honestly my doctor did not stress it so I am not rushing it. It does not bother me that he still has a bottle. I had one until I was three..

Re: Lets talk bottles again, moms of 1 year olds...

My DR. told me there was no need to stop the bottle...

He said it was far more important for him to have milk than it was for me to get rid of the bottle...

He has one when he wakes up, and one before bed...

Im thinking of getting rid of them @ 18 months... just because Im done cleaning them- but if he dosent take well to that transition Im willing to give it a few more months...

IMO- @ 1 they are still babies- and since my Dr didnt push it, I didnt even try!

I work for a daycare center, and I can say that pretty much 7 out of 8 babies in the 12-18months room ALL STILL TAKE BOTTLES~

RJ ONLY gets milk in a bottle, all other fluids go into a sippy cup- in which he drinks throughout the day!

Re: Lets talk bottles again, moms of 1 year olds...

Marissa is FINALLY off the bottle at 17 months! I have been trying to get her off since her first bday but she totally refused. Finally, last weekend, I noticed that she was drinking the entire sippy of milk when I offered it to her, so, that was it! No more bottles! In a way, I was sad...my little girl is not a baby anymore. But, I'm also relieved that I won't have to deal with the transition when she's older AND that I no longer have to wash Dr.Brown's 5 piece bottles! Chat Icon
That being said, I, too, believe that they should be drinking a certain amount of milk a day and if they refuse to drink out of a sippy then stick with the bottle. Good luck! It's definitely not easy! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Kevin is 19 months and gets 2 bottles a day. Since he is so limited as to where he can get calcium from, I'm scared to take the bottles away and try to go to the sippies for milk. He only drinks about 1/2 a sippy of water when he uses it.

Re: Lets talk bottles again, moms of 1 year olds...

Since I am off this week I am going to try the transition this week. I am glad to hear though that there are others in the same boat as us, still giving bottles. My DH and mom are persistent in telling me that it's OK for her to be on bottles, I just don't want her to be "addicted" to them since she totally loves them way more then ever before and also I get so worried about her teeth.

We'll see how this week goes!

DD is almost 15 months and still has 3 bottles a day. She is also still on formula because of her food allergies...

She drinks water and apple juice from a sippy cup thru out the day.

my kids had bottles for a LONG time, I won't even say, but I can tell you thatthey don't have them anymore (7yo and 4yo), I let them decide when they wanted to get rid of it, they loved their ba-ba's, I wouldn't take it away unless it was harming them.Chat Icon
