Leave to care for sick family member?
Just curious if anyone has experience with this or knows someone who does. My mom was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. She doesn't really have anyone else who can a) bring her to appointments and b) interpret the information and help her medical decisions other than me. Right now I am off for the summer so I have been going with her to all appointments. But I'm nervous for September obviously. I don't need to take a whole 12 week FMLA leave, but I want to see if I can take days when necessary. I am still relatively new, going into my 3rd year as a speech teacher. I'll try calling the UFT office and find out more too.

You can use FMLA to protect you in the situation. I believe you have to use your CAR days first up to a point.

I think it is possible. I think one of my
Coworkers was going to use fmla to take off 1x a week to take her husband for chemo. He unfortunetly passed before she began this.

Sorry to hear that. I am still waiting to find out exactly what treatments my mom will be needing. At this point, I won't find out exactly until school starts. I just don't even know who to inquire exactly. Not sure if my payroll secretary is who would know. I'll probably approach my speech supervisor first. If I knew it'd only be a couple of days, I'd just call out sick, but I rather not get penalized. Plus I have a 2 year old so... ah a lot going on.

I would call the union if you are a city worker and talk to a leave specialist. I'm sorry about your mom and I know it is so stressful as you approach the new school year. Good luck and prayers.

Apply for intermittent FMLA.

I'm so sorry. I had to do this to care for my Dad. You can take FMLA intermittent leave. Take off when you need to.
Contact HR and they will guide you through the the paperwork process. I actually have it every year now as my son has medical issues.....so I reapply every year and use days as I have to.
Prayers for a complete healing for your Mom.
