Ladies who run!!!

I recently started the couch to 5k program (please keep in mind I never ran before) and on week 5 I got Patellar (kneecap) Tendonitis. Has anyone ever gotten tendonitis from running, if so, how long did it take to heal???

TIA

So sorry to hear you are injured. Tendonitis take a while to heal. Fortunately it's an injury you can work through, whether its running or biking, or an ellipitical machine. The down side is that if you do decide to work through the discomfort, it does take longer to heal. There are two schools of thought on this and I have done both methods and they both work, however laying off any impact training does make the injury go away MUCH FASTER and stay away longer!

Now you should be doing exercises to strengthen the knee, so this doesn't happen again, should be taking an anti-inflamatory and icing your knee on a regular basis especially after physical exercising.

Good luck and feel better!

I am actually seeing a PT to help with the discomfortI, icing my knee a few x's a day and taking advil.. He said I can go back to the gym tomorrow, but not to run for at least a week. I may try the elliptical tomorrow. I am so bummed out about this.....I was building up my stamina and really challenging myself and now I am forced to take a few steps back. Oh well!!!!

Thanks so much for the feedback!!!!

You can keep up your cardio with the elliptical pretty easily, also a spin class or swimming will also work. Don't get too discouraged, you won't lose too much in a week or so and the alternative exercise can actually build muscle and strength in other areas and make your running stronger eventually.

I have been sidelined many times. What I usually do is add more strength work in addition to the non impact cardio which usually holds me over till I can run again. I have actually seen the benefits of the variety in my routine and now only run 3-4 days a week, spin 1x or 2x and do personal training like work 2x.

Hope you have a speedy recovery!

Sounds like you've got a great plan! Sorry you have an injury but I think it's a good idea to let it heal and concentrate on other activities. You will be back and running in no time Chat Icon Chat Icon
