Wow. Some of these comments...
There are those of us who want to start life again and those of us who don't. Nobody is changing anybody's mind. However the people who want to stay locked up forever SHOULD DO SO! I do not see why the other 300 million people need to be locked up too.
And before someone says "I can't stay home, I am an essential worker" my response to you is "Yes. Yes you can stay home. Just stay home. What is stopping you?"
Not having an income
So you mean they are prioritizing money over a human life?
So you mean their income is more important than everyone else’s who cannot work?
This isn't directed to anyone in particular, just adding to the comments regarding money and lives.
I think everyone would agree, ANY and ALL human lives are important. I don't even think that's up for debate. BUT..........because there is always a but as nothing is black and white.............people NEED to survive in this society. We ALL need our incomes, we ALL need to put food on the table and pay our bills. Whether someone understands the why of this next point or not, we ALL absolutely NEED the economy to keep churning. Money needs to change hands, money needs to flow. People need to consume and travel and invest. It's SO essential to this country functioning that the economy isn't stagnant. By shuttering jobs and businesses we've completely halted the economy and short term, we can bounce back but the longer this continues the more unlikely it is that we bounce back any time soon. This could take YEARS to undo.
People cannot defer their mortgages, car payments and other bills forever. Those lending institutions NEED to be paid. Factories and plants NEED to be open because at some point (and we're seeing it already) the supply chain WILL break down, there are essentials we won't be able to get because people cannot work. Small businesses absolutely cannot stay closed for months on end, they don't have the means or the money to stay afloat and they will close their doors. ALL of this leads to a high unemployment rate and subsequently, a crash of the economy which has been happening for weeks now.
This NOT sustainable and there is a point of no return.
EVERY life matters. EVERY single one BUT stay at home orders were NOT meant to be forever, they also were NEVER meant to STOP this virus or the loss of life. People were going to die no matter what measures we took. That is a fact. The same number of cases were going to happen. ALL this was meant to do was to slow the rate of contraction so that everyone wasn't getting sick at the same time and overwhelming the healthcare system. We have accomplished that. It's time that we let people get back to work, it is ESSENTIAL to our society. Every person's job is ESSENTIAL to our economy, to our society and to one's own livelihood.
Saying that the country NEEDS to open is NOT saying that you do not care about other's lives or your own health. It's understanding that while trying to mitigate the virus as best we can we have to concurrently LIVE our lives because letting the economy and society crumble around us will have longer lasting and more detrimental effects long term than any virus. A person's physical safety, mental health and income are VITAL and to ignore that would be remiss .
It's almost been TEN WEEKS. We need to start moving forward despite the virus, it's not going anywhere but our country is falling apart around us. In many regards, that scares me WAY more than this virus. What will life look like for us all when everyone from businesses to individuals are bankrupt, when our kids aren't being properly educated and when our collective mental health suffers because people aren't socializing with their family or friends or because they are trapped at home endlessly in bad situations?
The country needs to open up. It's a FACT at this point that cannot be ignored much longer.

They have mandatory shutdowns, restrictions on a lot of things, gradual reopening, etc. They are one of the highest per-capita testing countries, which is a huge factor.

Same.
People still believe we are doing this to make the virus go away. We are just flattening the curve. It's definitely not sustainable... I'm afraid what is going to happen if we don't start opening soon.

Sweden has paid a high price in deaths.
