Kenneth has strep... AGAIN. Antibiotics not working due to his other meds??

Kenneth has been sick with strep throat twice in the past two weeks. The first time, the antibiotics weren't working like they should b/c of all the other medication he is on (anti-seizure and cognitive stimulators). So, when he got it again the doctor gave him a stronger antibiotic. It has been about a week and he has it AGAIN.

He was supposed to go to Jersey today for his special treatment (twice a week) and now he can't. He is at our doctor's office... The meds he is on are taking away the effect of the antibiotic. It is amazing that although he can't say many words right now he was able to convey to us that his throat hurt on three separate occasions. Sure enough, when we took him in - the immediate culture came up positive!

I just feel bad for him - does anyone know much about what they can do for him if the medicine he is on is dumbing down the antibiotic?? I'm waiting for my Mom to call me back

Ugh two steps forward one step back! I hope they figure out the ABs and get his strep healed, that s*cks and it's so painful! My good RN friend is always reminding me... "the body is a compensatory machine" it's like our mantra lately. Hope Kenneth feels better and his therapy gets back on track ASAP!

I used to get strep alot, and a lot of times I didn't even get antibotics because the dr's would say its was one of those things that has to run its course.

It really stinks, I remember it well!!

Lots and lots of fluids and REST REST REST!! it always worked for me. If he gets a fever though, I would take him to the hospital.

he gets better quickly. If you guys need anything, call us!!

I'm sorry he's sick again. I used to get strep throat a lot when I was a kid and it used to help to put apple cider vinegar on a rag and wrap it around my neck. It sounds weird and smells nasty but it always helped me. Maybe that will at least help with the pain. Hope he feels better soon.

I have no idea if this is safe with his other meds so please ask a doctor or someone BUT..I was so prone to strep growing up. I lost didnt have health coverage after I turned 18 for a while, so I couldnt go to the doctor much when I got it.

I read and was told to buy propolis..its from bees. All natural...I would take the drops...and feel better in 2 days. It helped SO MUCH! I also took it as preventative too. It worked so well!

I hope Kenneth feels better soon!!

I'm so sorry Kenneth isn't feeling well. It doesn't seem fair that he should keep getting sick on top of everything else! I hope he feels better soon so he can continue on his road to recovery!

There has to be something else they can give him! Maybe a pharmacist would have an idea...

Even in people without a situation such as Kevin's, often Strep doesn't respond to certain abs. Many times people will have to take 2 or 3 kinds before the right one gets rid of it. So that simply could be what is happening here. Hopefully he will respond to the next one they give him.

The Doc put him on a VERY strong AB this time. This particular one should not have ANYTHING to do with the anti-seizure meds... one should not make the other weaker and vice-versa.

If that doesn't work he needs to go to an Ear, Nose, Throat Specialist. I just hope it knocks it out... I don't know if his immune system is down since he has been hurt?? It's weird.

Thanks again - I'll look into that natural remedy - that sounds like it could help! I'll ask his Doc to make sure it's OK.

About 8 years ago I had strep every couple weeks for a few months and the first 2 AB's worked then the docs said I was getting immuned to the AB's when it wasn't working for the 4th time. He had me ride it out which was very painful but after that i been fine no strep since. Maybe he is immune to the AB's. I hope the new ones help him. After all he went through and he gets this. for Kenneth and I hope he gets back on track again and feels better.

I had a friend who was always getting sick with strep. Someone told her about these things, i forget what they are called but they are like rocks that form on the tonsils. They told her to gargle mouthwash everyday and they should go away. She did that and it worked! Im not sure if he is able to gargle but if he can, its worth a try.

Yes, he had another culture so that's good.

The good news is he is much better today and seems to be improving and feeling more like himself. The AB seems to be working and I told my mom about the propolis which she is going to get for the future to maybe prevent any future strep cases!
