IUI cycle cancelled due to poor response

My doctor has cancelled my IUI cycle due to poor response. Even though he increased my dosage there was no increase in the size of follies from last Wed. To begin with, I had only produced 2.

I am so bummed. I have to figure out if I want to do another cycle with increased dosage or do the Clomid Challenge test to see if there is a problem. I had a day 3 FSH and everything came back normal. My doctor said if I am not responding well to these drugs that could mean I will not likely respond well to IVF since they are similar drugs.

Has anyone else experienced this? I appreciate any information you may have - I am feeling pretty hopeless right now.

Re: IUI cycle cancelled due to poor response

HI, couple of questions, what CD are you on and what drugs were you taking?

I was on Follistim and my doctor wasnt seeing enough activity too and they switched me to Repronex, which did the trick.

Lots of luck!!Chat Icon

Re: IUI cycle cancelled due to poor response

As Boosh said, it's very unusual for a cycle to be cancelled without switching the drugs. You may want to ask why they didn't switch if they thought you were responding poorly. Especially if your FSH is normal.

Re: IUI cycle cancelled due to poor response

I agree with the above poster. What kind of meds were you on? At first, I was on 1 vial or gonal-F and 1 vial or repronex...I was not responding well. Soon...I was up to 4 vials of gonal-F with 1 repronex and that worked for me. Also...I was told the average days of injectables would be 5-7 days...and I was always on 8-10 day option.

Re: IUI cycle cancelled due to poor response

I am on CD 12. I was taking Bravelle – started with 2 vials per day on CD 3 (sorry I don’t know the dosage) On Wed and Thurs we upped it to 3 vials.

My doctor said next cycle I would be doing Bravelle with Menopor. He did say this was sort of a test cycle so the dosages were on the low side to see how I would respond.

For those that had their meds switched, did it occur in the same cycle or did you make the adjustments on the next one?

I didn't switch my meds...but the dosages were upped during the same cycle. On my first injectable cycle...I started with 1 vial or each...they upped to it 2, then 3 then 4 because I wasn't responding as they thought I should. That cycle didn't work. On my next injectable cycle...I started with 4 vials and that was the cycle that worked for me!

First here are some Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Second IMO your Re should have switched meds. Just because you didn't get a good response this time doesn't mean you won't get a good response next time for IUI or IVF. Keep your head up.

What meds are u on and what doseage?

For me it occurred in the same cycle, I was on about CD10 when they changed my meds.

On my first cycle I started on low dosages also but eventually it was increased.

Re: IUI cycle cancelled due to poor response

It was always on the same cycle for me also. They would start out low and change the dosages after each sono.

Even on this past IVF cycle - they started off high 2 Menopur/2 Bravelle and 1 Ganirelex and then dropped off after the sonos.

Another question, did the doctor tell you what size the follies are?

Wow, Im suprised they cancelled the cycle, the 17 one is very good. Im sure if they upped your dosage one more time it would of defintely matured.

That makes no sense at all...what CD are you? At 17 you should be ovulating any day now and there is no reason you shouldn't have done the IUI...but then again I'm not a Dr.Chat Icon

I totally agree. Chat Icon

And, IMHO, I don't understand why bother cancelling it even if the follies are small. Why not just give it a shot? If they're not mature enough it just won't work, right? Chat Icon

I totally agree a 17 follie on CD12 is very good. Thats about where I was this last cycle.

Re: IUI cycle cancelled due to poor response

Thanks for all of your replies. I'm not sure why my RE cancelled the cycle - he tends to be conservative so maybe he felt at this point the follies were not going to grow much more so why use up an IUI? I don't know.

Re: IUI cycle cancelled due to poor response - update

My doctor called and it looks like I already ovulated based on my progesterone levels. Also on Monday we had spotted what we thought was a cyst but it disappeared. Apparently it was a follicle that ruptured = ovulation. I'm not surprised since I've always ovulated on the early side, usually CD 10 or 11. Ergo, cancelled cycle.

He is recommending Bravelle/Menopor with Lupron for the next cycle. Or I can do the Clomid Challenge to see if there is a problem but he doesn't think there is one since my day 3 FSH was 6. Has anyone done this test? I was on Clomid for 6 cycles last summer and I hated it! I really dont't want to do it again, not that 2x day injections is a party.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and helpful advice. I am totally going to the wine store after work!
