Is this true about kids/sickness?

My kids are still young (2.5 and 1) and not in school yet.

But I've heard from multiple parents:
"Just wait until they go to school/day care/nursery school - they will get sick and it will last for 2 weeks then they get better for a week, then they will get sick again for 2 weeks and repeat.
Plus you'll get sick from them during that week they are better.
All in all, kids will be sick at least half the time and you'll be sick at least 1/4 of the time"

Is it really THAT bad?

Is this true about kids/sickness?

In my experience, no, it is not true. I have 2 kids - one in K and the other in daycare. Sure they occasionally get sick but nothing like you described above.

This has been basically been my life since around Thanksgiving. My son is 2 and in daycare and in our family of 3, one of us has been sick for almost 4 months now.

They will get sick, yes but not to that extreme. That's exaggerating it a bit, in my experience.

Re: Is this true about kids/sickness?

DD has been in daycare since she was 4 months old. There was a couple of weeks there where we couldn't win- she was sick every other week. Chat Icon But now she's totally fine and hasn't been sick since around Thanksgiving. ::knock on wood:: I guess it depends on the kid and the season. This one was pretty bad for everyone.

ETA: I don't think it lasted 2 weeks each time though.

Re: Is this true about kids/sickness?

I find this to be true. DD started school (Pre-K) in September and has been sick on and off since October. She was out sick for a week at the beginning of the month and when I brought her back her teacher said it's normal. And that next year when she's in K - it should get better. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Is this true about kids/sickness?

DC are 10 and 13, and it definitely hasn't been the case with us over all of those years. We do get colds running through the family once in a while, but I think I get just as many from my office as DC do from school.
DC are rarely sick enough to miss any school. Talking with DC's friends' parents indicate that DC are not the outliers, either. If there's something serious going around, then everyone gets it, but as a matter of course, most kids aren't that sick that often.

That seemed to happen in the beginning for DS 1 but, not the case for DS 2. DS 1 hasn't been scik much since the first year.

Re: Is this true about kids/sickness?

Not for us. DD has an immune system of a horse.
It depends on the kid and their immunity IMO

DD was in daycare since 8 weeks old and rarely sick- even in the petri dish that is daycare.
Once the class got coxsackie- she didn't get it. Ever.

All a crap shoot IMO

My twins started kindrrgarten this year and my youngest is in pre-k. We had a rough patch that started around thabksgiving with the stomach virus. It went through everyone but dh. Then it was a fever virus for DD. Then ut was the stomach virus again. Then it was the flu over xmas break for all three kids then it was the stomach virus again for dd. When we finally got it all under control, or we thought, DS got the stomach virus again 2 weeks ago. Last week i got it. Knock on wood i think we are finally done. This is probably our worst winter yet with sicknesses in this house but I don't necessarily think it's because they are now in school full time. I think it's just, that's what is going around and they are bound to catch it. Sometimes no matter what you do it's not preventable.

The first year or so of DS's life he had a constant cold. Literally sick for 3 weeks out of the month better for one and back to being sick. But since then he will get a cold etc but we are not home because of his sickness.....its just minor colds nothing crazy.

My son has been in daycare since 7 months - he is now 15 months. He hasn't been on antibiotics once since being there. As far as illnesses go, yes he kind of has a perpetual runny nose thing going on, a cough or congestion doesn't phase us anymore... and he had a little stomach bug viral thing for a week... other than that, no major ear infections or anything else, knock on wood. I definitely expected it to be worse. But our daycare has an extremely strict illness policy. One runny poop diaper, and they are sent home. It can be annoying at times, but the trade off is that he isn't sick constantly.

DS1 was basically sick from Oct-March the first year he started school. It was never anything severe just an annoying never ending cold that eventually became a sinus infection. This year (his second year in school) he has had a few colds but it has been much better. DS2 basically gets everything his brother brings home so my hope is that by the time he is in school he won't get it as bad.

Re: Is this true about kids/sickness?

I remember reading that in the winter, school age young kids are sick on average twice a month. So it depends on what you count as sick. Sniffles, most people ignore... but the kid is sick. That's why most shots or surgeries will be performed with a small cold (as long as no fever or heavy congestion)... kid is sick half the time.

The kicker is when you have multiple kids... with my 3 now, someone is pretty much always sick. BUT, by then, you are used to it & it's less of a big deal.

Not at all for us. Dd1 started nursery school at 3.5 and had a few short illnesses here and there but never missed more than a day of school (she only went T/Th) and I rarely was sick. We were around kids a lot at library programs and play dates since she was an infant and she never had so much as a cold until 16 months.

Re: Is this true about kids/sickness?

It depends on the season.

My DD is 8 and in 3rd grade. Sometimes it feels like she is constantly bringing home a cold and when she does, it generally makes it way around my DS, DH and myself. However, some winters we make it through with barely anything.

Honestly though, there is almost always something going around school from stomach viruses to colds to lice. It is what it is, part of being in school.

Re: Is this true about kids/sickness?

For us this past month, yes. DS#1 got the stomach bug. He got better then I got it that weekend, I got better, DS#2 & DH got it. Then DS#1 developed a fever again. It went on like this for almost 3 weeks.
