Is this normal for this age (17.5 mos)?

DS did something last night that surprised me but then I realized that beyond the basics I really have no idea what is normal at this age so maybe this is and I was curious.

So yesterday b/f his nap DS didn't want to read any of his usual bks so he picked one from the karen katz lift the flap box set "what does the baby say" - I have never read him this book b/c it seemed to babyish for him (he just got it for Christmas). Anyway, I read him the book once through and a few other books.

About six hours or so later we are on my bed and DS is showing off for Daddy - all the bks from naptime were on the bed and he was going through them and pointing and saying the things he knows etc. So then he picks up this book and proceeds to go through every page and say the word under the flap (its a simple book with just one word baby words). Now he can do this with the simple books we read all the time (the body part ones) but is it possible that he memorized this book in one read through? Obviously he can't read so this was just memory....

So here I am thinking DS is so smart and then I realized - maybe everyone else can do this at this age or even earlier Chat Icon Just curious! TIA!

Sounds like a genius to me considering my daughter was barely speaking at 18 months. Chat Icon

Thank you for responding! No one else did so I'm not sure what that means either way Chat Icon

I really feel like I have no idea. He will say a bunch of words and count a little bit and I think WOW he is so smart - then I come on this board and read that other DC his age are counting to 10 and higher and have double the amount of words - that is why I posted this - not to hear whether he is so smart but to get a guage on what is normal so I know how to work with him. Ok, thanks again!

I'd say his language skills are definately advanced! My dd only has about 50 words or so and she is aboutt the same age. She repeats what we say, all the time too, but probably would not name all the items in any of her books. But I do think she knows what they all are (She will point when asked.) SHe knows so much that I do not even realize and really shocks me sometimes. She goes to daycare too, so I guess I may not realize what she has learned there.

BE proud of your ds for everything he can do....advanced or not. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
