Re: at what age is it normal

DS said DaDa 6.5 months. Didn't say MaMa until 8 months. However, when he said MaMa - he meant me - however, when he first said dada - he was babbling it with other gibberish all the time Chat Icon

ETA: His first "word" was hi - he said it really early - probably around 3 mos. He said it all the time. DaDa and BaBa were the next "recognizable" words he said.

I'd say by 12 months they should have a first word. I do not consider anything a word unless it shows proper meaning. My dd was calling me Mama for a while and I think it was just for me but I am not totally sure...but I am sure that she says "uhoh" when she drops something and "wow" when she first holds a toy. I think she has other words but I can not tell for sure. My dd is 10 mo.

My ds spoke much later and is still very smart so I guess that is what was normal for him. He called my husband and I both "dami" at 18 mo and itdefinately was refering to us so that was counted as a word when I had him evaluated for speech. He did not qualify.
