anything CAN be a nickname if you want it to. It really doesn't even have to have a rrhyme or reason.
My BIL nickname is "Dumpe", weird I know, but the story goes that his friends called him "Dopey" (Snow White) and one day somebody slipped and said "Dumpe" (in HS this was just hilarious  lol) so it stuck. It may not be the nickname traditionally, but they can use it.

tom, thomas - tommy. william - willie. samantha - sam. maxine - max or maxie. etx.. who cares... what's the big deal anyway??? if she wants to call her child that then go right ahead. but if sophia decides she doesn't like being called sophie that's her call.

tom, thomas - tommy. william - willie. samantha - sam. maxine - max or maxie. etx.. who cares... what's the big deal anyway??? if she wants to call her child that then go right ahead. but if sophia decides she doesn't like being called sophie that's her call.
I said like 30 times, including in the OP that I don't care what they call her, I just wanted to know if it was a separate name.

sure.. it's technically a different name if you MUST get down to it. but i'm gonna give it a different spin regardless. who really cares. she could call her own daughter sophie since she likes. i dont' think anyone would think she's calling out for someone else while sophia's in the room. also, since you insist, tell your nutty sis-in-law (and company) that she's wrong.
