Is it possible to enjoy the beach with a wild child toddler?

Because I was miserable at the beach today! Maybe it's my anal-ness, but man, going to the beach with Ava is the most difficult task. She was bolting towards the water, taking off onto other people's towels, eating sand, sticking sand up her nose, in her diaper, in her ears....And there were all these other babies, happily playing in the sand with their sand toys, or napping on blankets, and my kid is running around like a wild animal hyped up on caffeine. I think the beach will have to wait until I have like 10 extra hands to help out next timeChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

It's no fun for us either. He likes to throw sand up in the air and gets it all in his eyes. He runs around like a lunatic and loves to try and steal other people's balls, buckets and towels.

Wow! Good for you for getting out there!! I have to tell you, when Katherine was 1--even up to 18 months--I would never have gone to the beach! Taking her to a friggen restaurant was actually too much (although we did it all the time Chat Icon ). She would demand "Up! Up!" (and assorted other wild behaviours) throughout the whole dinner while the other little kids were sitting and eating like ladies and gentlemen Chat Icon

However, she really made a huge turnaround lately. She even goes into stores with me and doesn't bolt off (never liked the stroller, forget it!).

Next time you go to the beach this year--yeah, bring help, but I bet next year, she's going to be great! If I didn't have the baby, I would probably attempt to take Kate alone now.

BTW, you and your DH look adorable in your avatar pic! Chat Icon

Yeah, she's a wild one that Ava. My sister was with me, but she's so damn mellow and couldn't understand what the problem was. If only I could feel that way!

Re: Is it possible to enjoy the beach with a wild child toddler?

I tried it last month...even bought the annual pass for our beach. I went towards the end of the day, and it was crazy. He went straight for the water, it wasn't warm at all so I didn't even want to be near it. Then just ran all over. After a little while, I packed it up. And don't think I'll be back anytime soon...at least not by myself!

Much easier relaxing by my parents pool...

It works!!! They can't get out of the hole until about 15 months and even when they can it takes a while so they try to escape the whole time giving you ample to time to sit and enjoy the view from your chair and then they just kind of learn to play near the pit and actually my son would then try to rebury himself..lol Plus when they are half buried you can cover them with the umbrella since they can somewhat spin but not really get out of its covering.
I'm telling you, you may look odd but it works! I'm at the beach by myself with him since Dh is never home most of the year with living in Florida and at that age I would give burying her a try..lol

See by 16 months he could escape but no joke he would only play by his hole and try to rebury himself because he loved it so much..lol

BTW, look how nice our beach is there was no way a toddler was making me miss out on it so we worked thru the problem..lol I hope it works for you!

Re: Is it possible to enjoy the beach with a wild child toddler?

ahhhh no Chat Icon

DD is 17 mos now and we live 3 blks from the beach. DH always takes her on his own and doens't have a problem but that's because they spend the whole time by the water (walking, going in) while I on the otherhand like sitting under an umbrella and relaxing.

Unless you're willing to walk around the whole time and you enjoy that then yes it is possible but if you're like me i have to say no Chat Icon

I wouldn't even dare with Alex. We can't even take her out to lunch or dinner with us without it being a fiasco, I can't imagine what taking her to the beach would result in Chat Icon

Rach,

WOW! You are brave!!! I havwnt even attempted the beach with Alyssa. I feel bad because I want her to get to experience it - - but Im just not up for chasing her all over....watching her eat sand..and all of the other fun things you mentioned. Aly is crazy - very energetic and she wouldnt sit still and play with sand toys. Even at home - we have the sand and water table - she pours all of the samd OUT of the table - and eats it and throws it down her pants UGHHHHHHHH and I soo love the beach, pre baby that wasChat Icon

I hear ya, once you get the hang of it, it becomes easier. We go to the beach a few times per week, sometimes just me and the 3 kids, but I remember the 1st few times I was pulling out my hair keeping track of who wa sint he water, who was making new friends up on the sand, and who was chasing seagulls. Haha, thanks girls. Ok, so let me get this straight, I need to bring DH, bury her and obviously have her talk to Marcie's Ali so that she learns that sand is just bad news, did I miss anything?Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Is it possible to enjoy the beach with a wild child toddler?

No, I dont think. Unless you want to bring a play yard to put her in from time to time. If you're going for an entire day, I dont think it's a bad idea - we did that with DS when we stayed with friends at their beachhouse - but the sand was so close to their house that it wasnt a haul to bring it out. I had a tent and everything over it. Otherwise I call this year a wash as far as the beach. Next year will be a lot different with 2 year olds and the beach. DH and I tried to do Tobay with the 3 kids last week and I ended up having to carry DS 95% of the time bc of all the same reasons you mentioned. Maybe some kids wont run off and will sit quiet (I never had one of these kids!) but most will still sample the sand which is a PITA since it's everywhere (obviously!)

I really thought about bringing the play yard, but I didn't want to look like some overprotective nut, which would have probably been better than what it was likeChat Icon

Re: Is it possible to enjoy the beach with a wild child toddler?

It definitely gets better.

I didn't even *say* the word beach last summer or the summer before. Last week I FINALLY got brave enough to take my 2 and 3 year old to the beach and we had a great time!Chat Icon
Granted, it was a north shore beach. I'm not brave enough for the ocean yet.Chat Icon

I definitely didn't get to do any sun bathing, but w had a ball playing in the sand and in the water, and I got more down time than I expected, just sitting and watching them play.

Be patient... your day will come, and you will be looking back on the crazy baby time fondly (I know that sounds nutty, but it's true!Chat Icon )
