I'm a mom (long birth story included)
I was induced on the 11th at 38 weeks b/c of high BP. The induction was scheduled for 7 a.m., but L&D was busy that morning so I was told to show up at 11 a.m. It took 4 people and 5 attempts to start an IV line.  I finally had an IV line put in at 3 p.m. The doctor was going to start me off with cytotec instead of cervadil, but I was contracting too much on my own for it. I didn't feel the contractions at all. I ended up only getting pitocin.
I was only about 1.5 cm dilated when I went in for the induction. The doctor kept increasing the amount of pitocin, but I didn't progress much. I think I was about 2.5 cm dilated at 9 p.m., which was when the doctor broke my water. I saw stars when he did that.  I really started feeling the contractions after that. By 1 a.m., I couldn't take the pain so I got an epidural. Unfortunately, I could still feel the contractions on my right side. The anesthesiologist came back later to give me more medicine and I finally got relief from the contractions. I was able to rest for a little bit.
Every hour, the dosage of pitocin was increased. I started feeling horrible rectal pain and pressure, which the epidural has no effect on. The anesthesiologist came back a few times to top me off and to try to provide some relief. Every time I started to feel better, the dosage of pitocin was increased and I began to feel stronger pain/pressure.
By 6 a.m., I was only 4 cm dilated. I had some type of catheter inserted to check whether the contractions were strong enough to get my cervix to dilate more. The contractions ended up not being strong enough and by 10 or 11 a.m., I was only 4-5 cm dilated. At that point, I was receiving close to the maximum dosage of pitocin allowed. The doctor gave me 2 choices. I could stop the pitocin for an hour and rest. Then, the pitocin would be started again to see if I could make any more progress. My other option was to have a c-section. The doctor felt that b/c my pelvis was narrow and I hadn't been progressing much, I'd probaby end up with a c-section anyway. The baby was also still very high up. I decided to have a c-section.
There were 2 c-sections scheduled ahead of mine so I had to wait a few hours. I was shaking on the table b/c I was so nervous. DH couldn't handle being in the room when I had the IV and epidural put in (my mom was there for support), but he decided he was ok for the c-section. He actually watched the baby come out. DH was the one who told me "it's a boy!"  We both got very emotional.
Harrison James was born on the 12th at 2:28 p.m. He was 8 lbs 1 oz and 20 inches long. He looks a lot like DH. Apparently, I would've ended up with a c-section no matter what b/c of the way he was positioned.
My recovery has been pretty tough, but I'm in less pain each day. Harrison had a 102 fever on Sunday and was admitted to the NICU. Having to visit him there was really hard. Luckily, his fever went down and he's doing well now. He stayed in the NICU until Tuesday, when we were both discharged.
I still can't believe I'm a mom. It has definitely been an adjustment, but I'm so in love with DS and I love watching DH interact with him.
