Ikea now charges a nickel per plastic bag

in an effort to curtail their usage all together.

they donate the 5 cents to the american forestery association (or something like that)

what do you think of this?

I thought it was cool. though I wish I would have known before hand. I had to carry a few small objects that I could have placed in a bag brought from home.

I am also going to start bringing my own shopper to the supermarket.

DOWN WITH PLASTIC BAGS I say!

I would be seriously irritated if I just spent a small fortune in .....Ikea whatever, and then you wanted to charge me to carry it to my car ! -

Re: Ikea now charges a nickel per plastic bag

I think I heard that San Francisco has banned all plastic bags from stores in the city - kinda smart when you think about it, if they are not there, you don't have the option to use them!

The only store I know around here that asks is Whole Foods, "paper or plastic"? And back when Food Basics was around (in NJ) you HAD to bring your own bags or you could buy a box for 10 cents (the leftover boxes from unpacking the items on the shelves).

Re: Ikea now charges a nickel per plastic bag

i think that's a wonderful idea. plastic bags are terrible for the environment. it would be nice if they credited you 5 cents a bag if you brought your own.

i hope every store starts going this

Re: Ikea now charges a nickel per plastic bag

I honestly keep wad of plastic bags in my car. If I know I am going to IKEA to buy small items, it isn't much of a hardship for me to bring one in with me. The big ticket items do not go in small bags anyway. I am not an environmentalist by any stretch of the word, but this is not a huge deal and is very doable. Good for IKEA.

Re: Ikea now charges a nickel per plastic bag

Our new Stop and Shop up here in Mass now has a system where you buy a few reusable grocery bags (89cents each) and bring them with you. You set them up in the cart and as you go through the store, you have a little hand scanner (think like the type of scanner that you brought with you when you registered at Fortunoff or Macy's) and you scan your food items and put them right into your bag. At the end, you plug the scanner into the register and your whole order comes up. Swipe, and be gone!

I LOVE it!!! No more plastic for me:)

Re: Ikea now charges a nickel per plastic bag

Just another reason to love IKEA - they are such a forward-thinking company.

I use the plastic grocery bags for disposing of kitty-litter-bombs. I can't think of a better solution...

Thats so ironic and hypocritical bc they're chopping down pretty much the majority of forests in Europe to make their furniture and then they're donating the $$ to the American Forestry Association???? They got some nerve...

hmmm...I don't know Syl.

perhaps they are doing something similari in Europe (I just don't think "donating to the forests we cut down to make your furniture, American people" would fly here)

anywhy, people have been using wood for furniture/construction since the dawn of time. as long as we can plant trees, we are ok...

plastic bags on the other hand...do nothing for no one.

Where did you get this information?

I believe IKEA only uses wood from managed forests - they're not just plowing down forests for their products.

Look at the label of where the furniture is made...thats where I got my information from.

I think its a GREAT idea that they're charging extra for the plastic bags in order to eliminate the usage and donate the money...but to me its a little hypocritical since like I said a lot of the pine forests in Poland and other western and easter European countries are being plowed down for the wood.

That's really not an informed conclusion - you're assuming something based on a label? Unless the label says: "Trees were plowed down in Indonesia for this table" all you're doing is assuming.

They are pretty environmentally forward and a lot of companies are looking to model themselves after them.

I'm really curious as to where you got the label info from...I would think this level of hipocrisy would have been called out a while ago. Chat Icon

I love it. I hate plastic bags (although I admit I use the blue diaper sacks to dispose of dirty diapers). I have my own green canvas bags for Stop and Shop, I keep them in my car, I guess I can use them at IKEA now too.

There have been a lot of articles in Polish newspapers about IKEA's relations with the Polish suppliers which have been selling the forests to IKEA for very little money...

ETA: My point is that they've targeted a lot of Eastern European countries for their natural resources for very low cost right after the fall of communism...these countries were in desperate need of money, thus began handing over their natural resources for basically nothing...

hmmm...I didn't know about this, but then again, I am not a beautiful SLOVAC, like yourself.

still, I do think that Ikea is at least fairly responsible. hopefully any plowing they are doing is in conjunction with some planting....

Chat Icon I'm sure IKEA has come a long way to being "socially & environmentally responsible" from when it first launched its products internationally in the 1960s...and yes, there are A LOT of freshly planted pine forests all over Poland and other European countries...and its good to know why.

I applaud them for it - so few people are making any effort, and really won't do so unless forced to. I think our environment, whatever is left of it, is so much more important than the mere inconvenience of carrying your stuff to your car. Kudos to them for taking such a strong stand. I wish others would follow suit!

The club stores (BJs, Costco, etc) don't have bags. You can use packing boxes that they are discarding.
