If you went on vacation and could afford a more $$$ hotel...
then the rest of your family, would you stay there by yourselves?
Even though the rest of the family is staying at a very nice (moderate) hotel.
ETA: I am not the one wanting to stay somewhere else

I definitely would. We're contemplating that right now. We can spend all day with family if we want, but when we go into the hotel room, I would rather be in a place I like than 2 floors away from a family member (or even worse... sharing a wall with a family member! )

No. We stayed in a hotel with family last summer, and it was much more convenient meeting in the lobby or having breakfast together in the hotel.

I just think it's strange. We are all very close and are planning a FAMILY trip. The other hotel isn't even close to us

No, I would stay at the same hotel. If it's a family trip, staying at the same hotel will be more convenient. If you want different hotels, book seperate vacations.

I would maybe do that or use airline miles to upgrade the flight
sitting in coach next to a 250lb Husband is not my favorite thing to do-

It's not me. It's someone else in the family that want's to stay at a better hotel Good idea

I think I would upgrade my room & stay at the same hotel.
If it was a vacation where everyone was going to go their own way & meet up for dinners (thinking Disney), I might think differently.

I would not even consider staying in a different hotel. it's a family trip. staying in another hotel defeats the purpose and will also make it look a little "snobby" on your part. JMHO
ie: a friend of mine got married a few yrs ago and blocked rooms at the Marriott, a nice hotel right? well a her BIL has $$$$ and I guess the Marriott was not good enough for him. so he stayed at the Garden City hotel and hardly spent any time with the family before or after the wedding.

Same here. I have been in this situation many times. It makes you the "outsider" and the "difficult" one because you aren't around with everyone else. Also, it is more difficult to plan activities together when everyone is separated. We just suck it up and stay together. It isn't worth the complications.

Im surprised that everyone is saying to stay with the family so quickly.
First off,it depends how far apart the hotels would be, the price difference, and WHO the family members are,and are they just being obnoxious about it and having to stay at a "better" place?
If its a summer vacation, we're usually out and about anyway by 7am. Is it a vacation where you'll be spending MOST of your time in the hotel ??
I dotn see why everyone needs to be so close to family in the hotel..  
heck, if anything thats your break
last year, my sis and I booked a trip of all of us together, and we had different rewards programs and stayed at 2 different hotels. We met at our places each morning, spent the entire days together, and the kids lounged at each of our hotels later in the evenings.
WE spent less than them and they were kickin themselves for it
Again, this is a "totally depends" situation.
in our case, we usually try to do ajoining rooms, so the kids can have one big slumber party, but that one time worked out that way because of our hotel programs, and it didnt affect anything at all.
