to answer the question, i'll usually throw in anywhere between $3-$5

Depends...if they really go out of their way YES...maybe 2 bucks...If not no tip!

I didn't tip last time (usually I sentd FH so I didn't know), but then I felt really bad afterward because they have a waitress taking and packing the phone orders, and I'm sure she gets waiter's wages and depends on tips too, but I didn't realize it until after. Next time I will just tip extra.

Well they are also taking your food order & presenting it to you for less then minimum wage.

I usually tip a $3-4.

always tip. Even curbside to go type places. It takes time and energy to pack up the order, make sure you have all utensils and condiments..it depends on the bill but always something.

Tip??? for what? Taking my money when I pick up my own food???!! If they delivered, they would get a tip, but they don't do anything extra. If anything, it's less work than waiting on as at the diner. It's the same as going to Burger King for take out, I don't tip them either! No way!

yes. but if we lets say get $25 worth of takeout, we don't tip the 15-20% we would if we sat there and had a meal. I give the waitress a few bucks. all she did was walk the order in to the kitchen and bring the bag out.

Waitresses and Waiters and the diner have to prep the order. They have to submit the order to the kitchen and sometimes custom make your order with certain things. Fast food places have this stuff all ready made and all the cashier has to do is grab the item and stick it in a bag. Then you have to go get your ketchup, napkins, straws..etc..
At the diner that is all put in the bag for you along with your utensils, sauces..etc..Some diners actually have the waitresses/waiters physically put the food in the "take out" containers. There is definitely more work involved. Same with Chilis..the more complicated the order the more work it is.

At the diner we go to....it's usually the owner that takes care of the to go orders and no I don't tip. I agree with the above poster that said....tip for what, taking your money?

There are so many people that are overworked and underpaid who TRULY deserve more money for back-breaking work. Now something like that I can see throwing in a few bucks for..

walking to the kitchen and packing a dinner?
I made $3.65 an hour at 14yrs old at the supermarket, and worked ten hour days at 14, no one ever tipped me for being paid so little

Really lets get real on this one.

We tip and overtip in many cases, but this one I really never heard of.
and if im eating diner food, I like to enjoy the whole "out to eat" experience

If you were to tip, how would you even know who to tip?...the cashier at the counter holding the food? I always assumed tipping was for good service in bringing the food to you, not for you going to pick it up...but hey, maybe I'm missing something.
