If you have landscapers, ect...do you know for sure that they are legal?
(only used landscaping because I know many illegals are in that field of work - and because it has more of a "connection" to a person, rather than asking you if you know if the guy who picked your bananas was legal, KWIM?)
anyway, do you know?
i'm not saying it's right or wrong,
or that you should or shouldn't know, but I am curious.
I recently hired someone to do my lawn & this question crossed my mind.

yes, i know for sure mine are legal. the owners of the company are italian and family members of a friend of mine. the workers they have, who are south american, have been working for them for 15+ years and are legal.

I don't have one yet as we are still in contract for our home, but DH was born in Queens, so yes, he is legal - at least he was when he was at Sears pricing lawn mowers.

Nope, I have never asked them for ID or proof of citzenship. But I can say with certainty that except for the owners of the company MOST landscaping co's employ illegal ciitzens.

I asked this question. Verbally I was told yes. They get paid on the books and I pay my landscapers in a check.

Same here and I also pay sales tax on additional services where it isn't factored in.

well, as an employee of a law enforcement agency of the US govt, I MUST ask. I could get fired for having an illegal work for me. so, I make it my business to find out by asking. and since I make it my personal business to also ask for if they are insured, I find out that way too.

i ask, the only contractor i haven't ask was the tree guy coming today and i am rather annoyed at myself that i forgot to ask if they hire legal workers to do the work. I normally ask every contractor.

How do you know they are telling the truth if they tell you the workers are legal?
Do you just take their word or do you see paperwork?

Same for us when we had landscapers. We've since gone back to DIY to save money, but if we were to hire landscapers again, we'd ask again.

Ours is licensed, insured, and 100% legal. In fact, he is VERY outspoken about the fact that his employees are all legal because he cannot afford the risks involved in hiring illegals. In his words "What if one of them got hurt or killed on the job???? WHo would be responsible? ME!"

Ours is a US citizen. I'm not sure who else comes with him to cut the lawn. I know he has one guy that helps him.
However, I do know several friends that employ illegal immigrants at their companies.
