if you have/had child with bad allergies..
what worked for your child?
My DD is suffering from really bad allergies this season. Her eyes are swollen, itchy, and her face has a rash. she is so uncomfortable. Her ped told me to give her Claritin but that is not working so he said to use Zyrtec so I gave it to her last night. Anyone find that worked for their child? I feel so bad for her she just can't go outside anymore without feeling miserable. This stinks.

We use Zyrtec but it takes a couple days in your system to truly work. I find giving at night is the key. Plus we use eye drops & nasonex on bad days

Re: if you have/had child with bad allergies..
My son's are pretty severe. We do Zyrtec in the AM, Patidor or Zataday drops before he goes outside and then Benedryl at night. It does take some time to build up in the system (we actually start this regimen before the trees even pop to minimize his suffering when they do. I also started him on shots at 4 (he's now 6) and while they're still bad, I can see the symptoms lessening over the last two allergy seasons.
Hope the pollen drops soon

I have a friend who just bought her DS allergy glasses/goggles. Not sure if that is something you would consider, but she has seen a huge improvement.

Re: if you have/had child with bad allergies..
Sounds like my DS1. He was so bad he couldn't open his eyes in the mornings. He also got eczema all over. Last year I had to take him to an allergist bc nothing worked for him. We found out he was highly allergic to tree pollen along with some other things. He put him on a prescription along with a special shampoo (he had eczema in his scalp and was waking up scratching like crazy). The prescription works amazing along with the shampoo. This year I started him on allergy meds the first sign his allergies started. Sooo much better.

He's on it this year as well. Allergist prescribed Levocetirizine. Takes 1 tsp once a day and works great. I have given him Benadryl at night if he's been outside all day and suffering really bad. I only use the shampoo twice a week bc it's a steroid. If he's doing ok then I give him Head and Shoulders bc his scalp gets itchy this season. Other than that I give him regular shampoo. He's just sooo bad Spring time. I also forgot to add I do have over the counter allergy eye drops the allergist recommended. He said to keep it in the fridge to keep it cold. Washes out the eye and helps (when he allows me to do it)

ok thanks. this is all helpful because she was fine last spring..this is the first year where she's just miserable. I'll see how she does with the Zyrtec and look into that one if hasn't improved.

Re: if you have/had child with bad allergies..
DD is 16m and we are going through this too.
She has been on Children's Claritan for about a week and we do see a difference. But, she now has an ear infection which is draining from her eyes so she now has an eye infection as well.
Benadryl did nothing for her. Claritan has been the best yet though we may also try Zyrtec.

Re: if you have/had child with bad allergies..
claritin didn't work for my poor son!
Zyrtec (or costco's version) works soooo much better!
WE give it to him in the morning. and on bad days we give him benedryl at night.
WE wash his pillow case every chance we get and make sure we shower him after being at school all day or after being outside.
warm paper towels on his eyes seem to give him some relief as well!
